Not clear from the article how “seasonal flu” was defined and how far back that data went. The trick is to isolate the effect of the virus. To do this, it seems that there should be some sort of age adjustment if the data went back far enough — aren’t the aging baby boomers who are dying from the virus now 10 years older, and in worse shape, than they were when the SARS epidemic broke under Obama?
LA county if health estimated 400,000 cases with 600 dead, thats just 0.15 percent ! Also ,USA has is least 1/20 th the deaths that we were first warned about when they were also saying death rate was 3 percent and there would be 2 million deaths in USA , now not so... The CDC cited 0.1% mortality rate for flu includes an estimate for unreported cases. Without the estimate I believe the mortality rate is around 0.2%.

In New Jersey as of yesterday the death rate based on confirmed cases is over 5%. In my county which is suburban/rural the percentage is just over 6%. In my township the percentage is over 12% and it is not urban at all. Assuming that 50% of deaths were in nursing homes that still leaves numbers higher than many people realize.
Just an FYI, for those looking to return to business as usual. I can respect that position and understand that not every state is identical. Just saying be careful..... this disease spreads fast and it kills old and young people. It can take down and kill a relatively healthy middle aged person in a few days, I’ve seen that happen more than once locally. For many that it does not kill, it leaves them all screwed up, possibly for the rest of their lives. I am not saying cower in fear, just use common sense and don’t be in a rush to take risks. Also be aware that as soon as you open up your state there are a bunch of people from the hot zone that are heading your way to escape this situation. Some of them are going to be sick.
In the first few weeks the more rural areas in NJ saw little infection but even with quarantine the numbers are creeping up now. I didn’t take this seriously at first and I think some of it has been way overblown but living in the middle of it now, I do see that this is no joke and it definately is not the flu.

I’m not either. I expect higher death rates than are predicted as we move away from the lockdown. But, OTOH, we have to do it. The Freepers are right about that and I agree with them. But they are looking the other way when it comes to projected deaths. Putting too much faith in the very iffy projections from the antibody testing.
I think we dodged a bullet with the shutdown. Apparently most Freepers think the magic flattening would have happened anyway and the the shutdown was a big mistake. I don’t agree with that.
