CHP bans protests at California Capitol after rally against Newsom’s stay-at-home order

Following Monday’s protest at the state Capitol where demonstrators defied Gov. Gavin Newsom’s orders banning large gatherings, the California Highway Patrol says it will no longer issue permits for events at any state properties, including the Capitol.

“Permits are issued to provide safe environments for demonstrators to express their views,” the CHP said in a statement. “In this case, the permit for the convoy was issued with the understanding that the protest would be conducted in a manner consistent with the state’s public health guidance.

“That is not what occurred, and CHP will take this experience into account when considering permits for this or any other group.”

Translation: only those events of which we approve will get permits. So, no demonstrations against the State will be allowed. Move along, citizen...

Er, I don’t think they can do that. It’s blatantly unconstitutional, since this was precisely the type of free speech and assembly the First Amendment was designed to protect.

Just don’t formally organize a protest. Let it be spontaneous — word-of-mouth. You don’t need a permit if 25,000 people drive their cars into Sacramento and circle the state capitol. Even faux-king Newsome-Blewsome can’t stop that.

“Permits are issued to provide safe environments for demonstrators to express their views,”

Funny, I don't seem to recall seeing "Permits" required to protest your government. And if thousands show up, then what?

Correct. It won’t stop anyone from protesting.
It just gets the CHP off the hook from a legal standpoint.

Newsome blew a gasket and wanted them to pull the permit.
But that would have exposed them to legal liability because they were just picking on this group.

By denying permits to everyone they cover their arses.
Spontaneous protests will still happen.

CHP auditioning for the Einsatzgruppen or full membership in Schutzstaffe, just being good little pension whores and licking the boots of the governor.
