Wild animals are reclaiming cities and streets during coronavirus lockdown

Afoot and light-hearted, they’re taking to the open road.

Amid the global lockdowns to curb the spread of the coronavirus, striking images taken in South Africa’s popular Kruger National Park — which has remained shut since March 25 — show a pride of some 15 lions napping in the middle of an empty paved road.

CNN reports that on any typical day, this area would be packed with tourists on safari excursions. But that doesn’t mean that the travelers would get to experience this sight.

“This lion pride are usually resident on Kempiana Contractual Park, an area Kruger tourists do not see,” the park tweeted Wednesday. “This afternoon they were lying on the tar road just outside of Orpen Rest Camp.”

That isn’t the only atypical sight.

“Lying on the road during the daytime is unusual because under normal circumstances there would be traffic and that pushes them into the bush,” Kruger spokesman Isaac Phaahla tells CNN. “They just occupy places they would normally shun when there are tourists … People should remember that [Kruger] is still a largely wild area and in the absence of humans, wildlife is more active.”

In the north of Wales, herds of wild mountain goats have claimed the empty streets of Llandudno as their own. Known as the Great Orme Kashmiri goats, they typically live on a nearby hill that looks over the town, rarely heading into it.

If we don't end the global lockdown soon, we are going to have a big fight on our hands to reclaim our cities and towns. The critters smell weakness and are moving in!

From what we hear from friends, who live on/near golf courses, in N. California, the coyotes have taken control of some courses night and day. They are becoming very aggressive in a little over a month.

A friend who, lives down an arroyo from a golf course had a deer killed by a critter in her back yard. Her yard guy is now carrying bear spray (don’t believe that a bear killed the deer).

We are on the San Francisco peninsula. House cat remains have been found in neighborhoods for years around here. Most people think it is coyotes. I haven’t run across any in our neighborhood, but I do see them when hiking in the hills. A couple years ago I passed one when hiking in the huge pasture at Westwind Barn in Los Altos Hills. He was going opposite me and we passed maybe 75 feet apart, both eyeing the other warily. Gave me the creeps.

I’ve seen them swimming across rivers in Skaggs Island, Sonoma County.

They are all over in the Sonoma/Napa/Solano area. We have had a couple of Wiley’s adopt our neighborhood, and they would go up the hill in the morning and come back down that afternoon. They were normal size and scruffy.

Re Skaggs Island. One of our sons and his best friend since
jr high, have slept in a boat near Skaggs Island the night before the opening of duck season. One night they heard big things swimming in the water and snarling. They never saw the critters, but coyotes might have been it. They now sleep/camp in a different part of that area.

or Nessie stepping out for a stroll in Scotland?

Sir Godfrey of the Nessie Alliance summoned the help of Scotland's local wizards to cast a protective spell over the lake and its local residents and all those who seek for the peaceful existence of our underwater ally.
