A small Iowa town received a big surprise last week from an anonymous donor who shipped every household in town $150 worth of gift cards good at local small businesses.

All 549 households in the town of 1,400 people received three $50 gift cards, according to the Des Moines Register, one each for West Side Bar and Grille, Hometown Market and Trostel’s Broken Branch.

Collectively, the cards added up to $82,350, or $27,450 to each locally owned business.

Mayor Jeff Lillie was in on the secret.

On March 26, he was called by a man who said he was the go-between for a donor who wanted to buy 100 $50 gift cards to West Side Bar and Grille and Hometown Market, a local grocery store.

Some folks. Wish we all had the means. Thanks to whoever it was. Maybe John Beresford Tipton, Jr?

What a great story! People are amazing and it warms my heart to read stories like this one. I wish I had the money to do this sort of thing all the time.

Wonderful, a story that does not have a racial component.

What a horribly written article. Town wasn’t named in the first 5 sentences.

Well IF one of us were writing it, it would, no doubt, have been flawless.

If that ain’t enough:

Perhaps our greatest claim to fame is Marion Michael Morrison, a.k.a. John Wayne, who lived in Earlham as a boy in the early 1900s. He attended school in the Earlham Academy Building that is now owned by the Earlham Historical Society, and his father, Clyde, owned a pharmacy in Earlham until poor health forced the family to move west.

JOHN WAYNE lived there!

my ultimate dream would to be a zillionaire and pass out money on the street...or go up to people like in “The Millionaire” and give many people a real hand up...

My wife is from a Mississippi ever town on the Illinois side.

It’s like a different planet, people are connected.
Not necessarily best friends or kin but they are connected.

Most families have lived in the area for generations.

When my elderly mother in law was in a home for Alzheimer’s, it was always Mr. M’s wife, everyone knew my father in law.
And they took very good care of her, even though she was a war bride from Milwaukee after WWII.

Going out to eat was always interesting. Stand up every couple of minutes to be introduced ... not much time to eat!

Anonymously- that’s the way God wants us to give. Not with big “charitable trusts” emblazoned with our names to give glory to ourselves.
