You nailed it. He obviously hated Britain’s high taxes, too.
Rumor has it he and Reagan were pretty chummy and really hit it off when they crossed paths during the ‘80 campaign. My own hunch is that had Lennon lived, he would have become less politically left and more eclectic in his old age. Who knows, it’s just a hunch.
He said privately that “Imagine” was “just a song” and it shouldn’t be over-analyzed and turned into some kind of deep anthem. Of course after he died, that’s exactly what happened.
