Henry Ford Health System says its been using the drug hydroxychloroquine to treat severe cases of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients.
Hydroxychloroquine recently gained a large amount of attention after President Donald Trump mentioned the anti-arthritis and anti-malaria drug in his March 20 press conference as being promising. Since then, there has been much discussion as to whether the drug is actually effective in treating COVID-19.
Dr. Marcus Zervos is an infectious disease specialist at Henry Ford. He says staff at Henry Ford has been using hydroxychloroquine to treat the most severe cases of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients.
We are not using it in outpatients, we're not using it in patients with mild infection, we are using it, however, in patients that are sick enough to be hospitalized with pneumonia that we feel are at risk of progressing their infection. He adds, We feel that there is data both from the early published studies as well as from our colleagues in China that have treated a number of patients to justify its use in the therapy of sicker patients that are hospitalized with coronavirus infection.

Henry Ford was the ONLY place where they would do a hip replacement on my wife.
All the others, even Mao, wouldnt touch it. Even the place near Phoenix that do the joint repairs for the baseball major league and NFL players wouldnt touch it.
Also, my sister in law works there.
It seems to me there should be a way to streamline the process of conducting a simple clinical trial to prevent the crippling of a country’s health and economy.
Okay great. What next and after that?
I’m not a doctor but I can read medical articles, and what I’ve read suggest that HCQ has two properties of value here. One, it alters the pH of the cell making it more difficult for the virus to take over the cell and reproduce (viruses can’t reproduce on their own) and two, it acts to modulate the immune response, which helps to prevent the cytokine storm which often results in death as the body attacks its own organs. The first is the reason that it is being taken by healthcare workers as a prophylactic to keep from getting the disease and the second seems beneficial for those who have it.
The point being, it seems that HCQ ought to be used across the spectrum of covid-19 not on just the sickest. Of course Michigan is lucky to be able to use it at all, thanks to their idiot governor.
So, does he think it works or helps?
They should test it on all the patients, not just those who are the sickest. Healthcare workers are using it as a prophylaxis.
So, if you hydrate your body with more alkaline water ( add lemons, although acid, cause upswing in pH ) - and add Zinc, might be a great first line of defense
I think they will as soon as they know they got enough on hand to go around.
Although they are getting a whole bunch in from Israel and drug manufacturers here. Its going to take a couple weeks. No doubt that is why the set back to the easement of restrictions till end of April?
How would one know if hcq had any effect on someone with mild symptoms? They can get better without any antibiotic or antiviral.
Does that regimen change the ph in the infected cell? How would you prove that?
“thanks to their idiot governor.”
You ought to hear my logger friends and what they got to say about her.
As for Washington State. MY nieces got some real choice words to say about that one up there. And they are democrats.
Test on anyone who is confirmed positive, asymptomatic or not.
The doctor quoted said that the reason they’re only giving it to hospitalized patients is because it can cause heart problems so people have to be monitored.
I call B.S.
There are lots of people with lupus and arthritis on the drug and they certainly aren’t hospitalized while they’re on it.
Agreed. Theyre using it, but they dont appear to be using it for the full benefit. Theyre sending mild patients home without a script that may have accelerated recovery, reduced shedding, and lowered the risk of them spreading it to others.
They should test it on all the patients, not just those who are the sickest. Healthcare workers are using it as a prophylaxis.

Yes. It seems counter intuitive to say that but it is exactly right. Relatively healthy individuals infected will rapidly improve and will be most able to resist any negative side effects. Stupid to wait until a last resort for an extremely compromised person with advanced stages on ventilators. Those patients will see less improvement and also be too weak to resist the side effects to this drug the worst being arrithma.

You don’t know. But if you give it to 500 people who test positive and compare that 500 to 500 others who don’t get it, you can see whether the HCQ group ends up with as many hospitalizations, intubations, and deaths as the non-HCQ group.
If there’s a significant difference in favor of the HCQ group, why wouldn’t you treat everyone with it (except for those with conditions that are known to be exacerbated by it, like some heart conditions)?
And if the difference was dramatic, then maybe, just maybe, you have a “game changer.”
You wouldn’t be able to prove pt got better with hcq. If you want to measure viral load changes as a surrogate marker..you could do it on the sicker patients.
Why give something with possible adverse effects to someone who doesn’t need it? It takes meds from someone who might really need it..exposes person to drug toxicities...and cost money.
