Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has banned abortions in the state in order to preserve medical resources to help fight the coronavirus. Governor Holcomb has issued orders calling for a halt to all elective and non-urgent surgical procedures in Indiana and he included abortion clinics in the new emergency orders related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Gov. Eric Holcomb in the order called on “all health care providers, whether medical, dental or other, and health care facilities, whether hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, dental facilities, plastic surgery centers, dermatology offices and abortion clinics” to cancel or postpone elective and non-urgent surgical or invasive procedures. The order also includes veterinarians as well.
Governor Holcomb’s emergency orders go into effect tomorrow.
The leading state pro-life group told LifeNews.com it was tremendously pleased with the new orders from the governor.
“Governor Holcomb’s new orders make it clear that abortion clinics are not exempt from complying with the suspension of elective surgeries,” states Indiana Right to Life President and CEO Mike Fichter. “In a time of crisis and severe medical equipment shortages, abortion clinics must not be allowed to use up precious medical supplies that Hoosiers need during the current health emergency.”
“Indiana Right to Life will urge state and local authorities to monitor Indiana abortion clinics closely to ensure compliance with the orders,” he added.
Other states have issued similar orders, but federal judges in Ohio, Texas and Alabama on Monday blocked orders banning nonessential medical procedures from including abortions.
In Texas, a federal judge in Texas with a long history of siding with abortion advocates ruled that Texas abortion centers can defy the governor’s order to stop non-essential medical procedures instead of helping coronavirus patients by conserving medical resources during the pandemic.
As LifeNews reported, at least some Texas abortion businesses have closed temporarily or stopped doing abortions in response to an order from pro-life Governor Greg Abbott to halt all non-essential medical procedures to preserve medical resources to fight the coronavirus crisis. Other abortion centers are waiting to see what the legal options are in response and may be continuing to kill babies in abortions.
But a federal judge ruled against the state and coronavirus patients today and sided with abortion companies:
Today, U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel granted providers, including Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas (which encompasses Austin), Whole Woman’s Health, and Austin Women’s Health Center, a temporary restraining order against Paxton’s directive, reinstating abortion care in Texas.
In his nine-page order, Yeakel says the abortion ban is inconsistent with U.S. Supreme Court precedent. “Regarding a woman’s right to a pre-fetal-viability abortion, the Supreme Court has spoken clearly,” he writes. “There can be no outright ban on such a procedure. This court will not speculate on whether the Supreme Court included a silent ‘except-in-a-national-emergency clause’ in its previous writings on the issue.”

In Iowa, Governor Kim Reynolds has banned abortions in the state in order to preserve medical resources to help fight the coronavirus. She said anesthesiology machines used during abortion procedures might instead be converted to function as ventilators so they can function as legitimate health equipment in a time of need.
Reynolds, who is pro-life, signed a state public health emergency declaration Friday that stops all nonessential medical procures to conserve medical resources. On Sunday, she clarified that killing babies in abortions is considered non-essential. That “does include surgical abortion procedures,” Reynolds said during a Sunday press briefing
“Making sure that we have the personal protective equipment to care of those Iowans who are on the front lines serving Iowans and those in need,” Reynolds says, “…to make sure that we have our health care providers and our first responders healthy so they can take care of Iowans.”
Abortion businesses have sued to overturn the order.

Ohio: Abortion centers are included in the order to close but they are refusing to close. The health department is now investigating those violations.
Mississippi: Abortion centers are included in the order and the state’s sole abortion business has closed.
