For the past two weeks now, we’ve been talking about hydroxychloroquine as the wonder drug in the fight against the deadly coronavirus. Two anti-malaria drugs hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are shown to be effective in treating COVID-19 patients after controlled clinical study conducted by doctors in France shows that a combo of Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin (Z-Pak) cures 100% of coronavirus patients within 6 days of treatment.
However, according to doctors treating coronovirus patients in Italy, Tolicizumab, a drug used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, has been shown to be more effective than hydroxychloroquine. Tolicizumab is so effective that the FDA gives green lights to Phase III Tocilizumab Trial for COVID-19 pneumonia. In a related report, Italian doctors said that a 101-year-old Italian man who survived the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic and World War II, recovered from COVID-19.
In another report, scientists claim Tocilizumab has been shown to help cure 95 percent of critically ill coronavirus patients in China. Tocilizumab, which is marketed as Actemra, is taken by patients with rheumatoid arthritis to reduce inflammation. Chinese doctors gave it to 20 patients during the peak of of coronavirus epidemic. Nineteen of the patients were discharged within 14 days despite being critically ill. Actemra has now been approved for use in China and for trials in the US
In response to a question from another doctor on hydroxychloroquine, Dr. Giusppe Galati, an Italian doctor, said in a tweet: “Dear @DrLuizSilva1 despite the large noise on social media. Here in Flag of Italy they are trying several combinations of antiviral included the combination HCQ + azithro. Infectivologist refer little benefit. The unique drug which is causing impressive improvement is #Tolicizumab.”
Tocilizumab, also known as atlizumab, is an immunosuppressive drug, mainly for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, a severe form of arthritis in children. It is a humanized monoclonal antibody against the interleukin-6 receptor (IL-6R).

hmmm Hydroxychloroquine is 100% effective according to this article and Tolicizumab is 95% accordign to article, and Tolicizumab is more effective?
We have dozens and dozens of millions of doses of Hydroxychloroquine , and it’s savign lives- and is nearly 100% effective- Why do we have to wait for a clinical trial of Tolicizumab that could take months? IF Tolicizumab isn’t available because it hasn’t been approved yet, while the Hydroxy drug is available, and being used, how is Tolicizumab more effective? The drug being used is far more effective than a drug that isn’t available- except for clinical trials-
Will they forego the clinical trials? People are dying- They need drugs NOW-

We are now in the year 2020. Unless this 101 year old man “survived” the 1918 Spanish Flu in the womb, something is not right about this story.
Just a quick check on GoodRx shows Tolicizumab ($1100) to Hydroxychloroquine ($20) is about 55x.

I think they throw a dozen scrabble letters up in the air and find the most unpronounceable combination, and that’s the drug name. I’m taking several of those myself.
but plaquenil is easier to pronounce...
I see a number of these bizarre names on various drug commercials, and I notice that several of the names end in “mab”, such as the one mentioned here. There has got to be some sort of drug naming convention that I’m unaware of.
I was curious who makes it - apparently Hoffman-La Roche.

I heard it from Brian Williams. He’s good with numbers.
This isn’t a cheap drug. A ‘unit’ is around $125. Just a humble guess....five-day regiment of this (if it’s like the other drugs) would be over $600.
I should note, it’s been around for 10 years, and usually for severe forms of arthritis.
Tolicizumab (Actemra) must be used to clean very large or very dirty fish tanks
Note to dem donors...don’t drink this cleaner, either.
On the other hand...
Generally it’s a shorthand rendition of its chemical structure.
