3 Things to Know if Chloroquine Wins the COVID-19 Treatment Race
NASDAQ ^ | Mar 27, 2020 6:45AM EDT | Adria Cimino The Motley Fool

Shares of others in the race may lose momentum

Companies working on COVID-19 treatment and prevention have seen their shares soar so far this year. Moderna (NASDAQ: MRNA) gained 44%, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: REGN) rose 15%, Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ: GILD) climbed 9%, and Inovio Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: INO) soared 102%.

These stocks may lose momentum if chloroquine becomes the "go-to" drug for COVID-19. As mentioned above, there is room for additional treatments, but if chloroquine gets the first-mover advantage, others that eventually enter probably will seize a smaller share of the market than hoped. The news also would burst the bubble of excitement about finding the cure or prevention for an untreatable illness. That element has lifted some of the smaller biotech companies that don't yet have products on the market -- Moderna, for example -- because an approval for COVID-19 would show their technology works in humans.

So, you might wonder, if chloroquine becomes the drug to treat COVID-19, which drugmakers will benefit? Probably none. Here's why: Chloroquine is an old drug, first approved in the 1940s for malaria, and today, there are many drugmakers that produce it or hydroxychloroquine -- too many to make it a best-seller for any one company.

I think a bunch of powerful people have invested heavily in the above companies. This creates an incentive to suppress any treatment which does not result in them making money.

Exactly. Always follow the money trail. These “powerful people” also love the “treatment” of cancer rather than an “actual cure”. Unless, of course, it’s one of those greedy SOBs that come down with it.

The better bet might be the vaccine folks down the line. Even if there are treatments, prevention will still be in play.

I think the entire Rat party is terrified that it WILL work and they are moving swiftly to ban it everywhere.

This from the party of medical cannabis.

Hilarious if it wasn’t sickening. Literally.

There are many medicines that are no longer have patent protection and yet still are manufactured.

I think those companies are more in the long-term play because most of them are developing vaccines, which the trials may not start until late this summer in many cases.

I think you’re right about that. There’s a whole institutional infrastructure that’s built to ignore anything that’s not currently patented.

BUT not everyone is bad. Bayer recently gave the US Government 3,000,000 Chloroquine tablets of which 750,000 were sent to NYC. Novartis stated they have 50,000,000 doses on hand with another 80,000,000 doses to be ready by May. (according to the Conservative Treehouse)

I'm talking about people who may have seen a high profit potential in certain new and patented drugs.

This is all we need to know. Living in one of the capitals of Big Pharma, it is plain to see how money rules the day. Our former Presidential candidate St. Booker could not resist the temptation of Big Pharma money and lost his virtue to them in a back alley some where in Newark. One of the nails in his progressive presidential coffin.

Of course, the powers that be will want the win to go to a company with pubic shares rather than to the people whose lives could be saved by a widely available, cheap cure.

Yup. and the new medications and vaccines will be foisted on the public assuming they are safe without proper testing because ‘it’s an emergency’. After all it will not be shown they aren’t safe. ‘Don’t test don’t tell’

So how can we keep publicity up for this cheap and simple treatment? I already see it being downplayed in the press. We need powerful spokespeople to keep speaking out about it and encouraging doctors to use it.

Let the INVESTORS of the new medications and vaccines be first in line to receive them.

Bingo! One reason why I wished the president would’ve ordered the clinical trials in a red state! Ny is going to screw him!! Cuomo has higher up inspirations!! AYE! I hope I’m wrong but I have a gut feeling chloroquine will be proclaimed as a failure by the mayor and governor of NY. Pray I’m wrong though..but the rats are evil and it’s all about power and the hell with the dying folk!! THEY ARE EVILLLL!!

The Plaquenil(Hydroxyclroquinine) works because it interferes with the method by which the virus RNA enters the cell by making cells more Zinc more absorbable. It interferes with the entry\replication. Another virus may not use this mechanism of entering the cell and render this treatment useless. This is a cousin to your typical rhinovirus(common cold) in the way it replicates. So technically not really a flu.

I did see an interesting article entitled.."The Covid-19 does not want to kill you." A virus wants live a happy virus life(even though it;s not typical alive, but organic) inside you. By configuring itself to be so immune reactive, it's not the best way to survive. So it mutates to something more benign so it can coexist with you. Best explanation I heard on why mutation in viruses is not always bad. Why also the HIV virus has mutated to something much less malevolent. Viruses are not born random killers, only men do that. Nature wants to survive and their host to survive also. They need healthy human cells to replicate in, killing the host, means suicide for them.

Now is not the time to make a killing. Provide honest services at reasonable cost. Make your damn fortune when the crisis is over. This is why so many people have a negative opinion of the “Investor Class”.

First, if it were me, I would prescribe hydroxychloroquine rather than chloroquine, since the effective dose is less and therefore has fewer side effects.

Keeping in mind that it takes a billion dollars and ten years to bring a drug to market (cut this in half if the FDA will fast track it):

Suppose Dastardly Evil Pharmaceuticals Inc., LLC, makes a profit of one cent on a tablet of hydroxychloroquine. If it had a billion tablets on hand, it could sell them tomorrow at a clear, straight to the bottom line profit of ten million dollars.

What management in its right mind would forgo ten million dollars in profit right now, in order to risk a billion dollars to bring a drug to market years after this hysteria is over?
