Senate clears 77-day extension of surveillance powers
The Hill ^ | March 16, 2020 | Jordain Carney

The Senate cleared a nearly four-month extension of intelligence programs that expired on Sunday as part of a deal that will also allow for votes on broader surveillance reforms.

The Senate had been expected to hold an initial procedural vote Monday on the House-passed bill that paired extension of the three expired USA Freedom Act provisions with some changes to the court established by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

Instead, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) came to the floor minutes before the scheduled vote and passed a 77-day extension of the three USA Freedom Act provisions.

The extension is retroactive to Saturday.

Senate Republicans had indicated on Monday that they had reopened negotiations with privacy hawks on a short-term extension.

As part of the deal, the Senate will vote on amendments once it turns to the House legislation, including a proposal from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) to block FISA warrants from being used against Americans.

...a 77-day extension of the three USA Freedom Act provisions.

A truly Orwellian title

There’s the hook. FISA snuck through so the Wuhan Scam will turn out to be not so bad after all. The sheeple are so easily panicked.

This does not sound like something most Americans WANT. I think the Patriot Act should be cancelled. NSA used to have a mandate NO SPYING ON AMERICANS. Period

Trump should not sign it, but he probably will. I’m having doubts about Trump. He’s becoming the lessor of the evils.

The USA freedom act. The name of the law that allows them to spy on our communications, grab your business records, and monitor everything you do. Who writes the names of their laws? George Orwell?

Would a court allow the extension of an already expired law?? Is it worth pursuing? We can do without FISA.

POTUS needs to tell publicly that his Veto pen is ready.

The Senate has done ZERO to question those responsible for the FISA criminal wrongdoing.

I no longer have faith in Barr and after today’s news that Durham is moving in to protect Schiff, he’s lost cred as well.

F the damn communist Democrats and the Republicans. These damn fools are so ignorant it is unbelievable. The FISA should have completely been killed. The FISA judges are criminals.

a nearly four-month extension

77 days = 2.5 months ... how do they get "four months"??

Lousy reporting again? Lousy editing?

Does anyone truly believe that the Intelligence Community actually feels lawfully bound by the FISA laws? When caught they simply tell the judge that the documentation that refutes their position is lost and it is accepted as such as they return to their intelligence gathering on Americans because, like all liberals, they serve a higher purpose therefore the ends justify the means.

Lousy dang cowardardly police-state scumbags!

All politicians and the millions of laws they hold us subservient with need to be permanently flushed... Then, restart the original Constitutional Republic beginning with the elimination of the 16th & 17th Amendments (at a minimum)...
