Pittsburgh airport to phase out using boarding passes at security checkpoints

Travelers flying out of Pittsburgh International Airport will soon not have to display a boarding pass to get past security, airport officials said this week.

Boarding passes will still be required at the gate to board the plane.

Officials with the airport and Transportation Security Administration announced that Pittsburgh is among several U.S. airports set to phase out the use of boarding passes at security checkpoints this year.

Instead, they are shifting to sophisticated screening machines that can verify passengers based solely on a government-issued ID card.

The Credential Authentication Technology, or CAT, allows security agents to pinpoint passengers and their specific flights using only an approved ID, such as a driver’s license or passport.

In coming weeks, about 500 machines will be installed at airports in U.S. cities, including Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Charlotte, Miami, Austin and Seattle. One machine is already in use at Pittsburgh International Airport, according to the airport.

Pittsburgh opened our new airport just before 9-11. It was designed to be a pleasant shopping mall and departure dining environment. Unlike most airports our size, prices were reasonable and comparable to what you would get in town.

9-11 changed all of that with usage limited only to airline passengers. Many shops and restaurant were forced to close for "security theatre". We have had short term experiments of allowing non passengers past the boarding gate without incident. I hope this is a step toward making those experiments permanent and bringing back the flying experience offered BEFORE TSA ruined it.

Flying these days is a constant reminder that the elites want to treat us like cattle.

I avoid it whenever possible.

Seems like this will only work if REAL ID is real and working better than the Obamacare website.

The dealine to have REAL ID is this Fall. There are somewhere between 10 and 30+ million people in this country who can not get REAL ID because they don’t have documents.

Do you really believe that the courts are going to allow them to be banned from air travel?

Neither do I.

If I can't drive there - oh well - staying home's cheaper anyway.

Great. Another technology that can fail and make me miss my flight.

Yes they really got whipsawed with the secure/non-secure separation the way the airport is configured.

It was designed to be a pleasant shopping mall and departure dining environment.

I used to fly through it all the time on U.S.

Then US Airways declared PHL their hub. Mistake!!! The comparison between the two in operations, weather, traffic and hospitality was night and day.

PHL was and still is a horrible airport to travel through.

You can get your boarding pass on your phone, and in any case they already have all the data so when you show your ID, you’re in (if everything lines up). This should make things easier.

Let met tell you - I LOVED the way your airport was pre 9-1-1! I purchased many items for my wife there on business trips. Got her a fantastic London Fog raincoat that was her favorite for many years. The shopping experience was terrific! It was one of my two favorite shopping destinations for my wife, the other being Talbots in Newport, RI. Absolutely spectacular (PIT, that is).

Thank you for posting this, it’s good to know your airport is making strides towards it’s better days.

Best of luck!

I am always opposed to having a federal ID; it’s a step in the wrong direction (and the end of the journey isn’t pleasant).

I’m sitting in the Seoul South Korea Airport as I type this.

Most airports, the dozen I have been through in the last two months, photograph you and take all fingerprints. They check that with their database and cross reference to your passport file.

No one gets through without the procedure.

I’m surprised the don’t take a DNA sample.

Americans’ right to travel and move within the United States is slowly disappearing. Just as government approval is needed to fly, government approval will next be needed to travel on government-funded roads (facilitated by driverless cars that require your itinerary be government-approved before the car will operate), then to walk on government-funded sidewalks.
