Why nominating Doug Collins for DNI would kill three birds with one stone

Many Republicans are crossing their fingers. After President Trump told reporters on Air Force One that he’s considering nominating Representative Doug Collins to be the next Director of National Intelligence, the benefits of such a move were not hard to calculate. It would be a huge win for the GOP on multiple fronts, not the least of which would be to put someone in the critical position the President could actually trust.

The President has already assigned Richard Grenell to be acting DNI, replacing Joseph Maguire who, as an acting DNI as well, was required to step down soon. There hasn’t been a permanent, Senate-confirmed Director since Dan Coats resigned last July. Grenell, who is also the Ambassador to Germany, is the first openly gay cabinet member in U.S. history, even if only in an acting role.

Collins represents three big wins for the President, the Republican Party, and the country if he were to accept the nomination and be confirmed.

I hope the President can convice the loyal Doug Collins to step forward. He is planning on a Senate run is he not?

I think where this is going....by convention time...Pompeo gets the nod to be next VP candidate. Then Grenell gets pulled over to be Secretary of State, and Collins gets the nod after the November election, to be the chief of DNI...giving the governor a chance to pick his replacement for the House. Trump is often thinking in 3-D chess situations.

The Constitution requires that all vacancies in the House be filled by ELECTION.

By law the Director of National Intelligence should have an intelligence background. Collins doesn’t have that. He’s never worked for any intelligence agency, did not work in intelligence in the military, did not serve on an intelligence committee while in the House. If he’s appointed as acting then he’s out in a year. If he’s nominated for permanent post he’ll never be confirmed.

Governors don’t appoint House members. They call elections when there’s a vacancy.

Yes, Collins has announced he is running against Governor Kemp’s appointee, Kelly Loeffler.

I think that nails it.

Still, I hope Trump can find a way to stop Collins from challenging Loeffler for the Senate seat, and do it soon.

I think Grenell is as much of a loyalist, and he was fired from Romney's 2012 campaign for being gay. Romney will have to think twice about voting against, because if that story comes out, Romney won't have a friend in the world left.

Political payback can be a birch Mittens!

Side issue: I keep seeing ads for loeffler on TV. where is the money backing her and is she as strong as Collins? I was surprised to see DOug take her on against the desire of the ga gov who appointed her from out of the blue.

“Pompeo gets the nod to be next VP candidate.”

You mean instead of Pence in 2020? I love Pompeo, but Pence has been loyal and done a good job as far as I can see. I worried about Pence and his possible Deep State status, but I think that Trump’s commitment to Christian values has solidified Pence’s loyalty. It seems that they truly like and respect each other.

“I keep seeing ads for loeffler on TV. where is the money backing her “

In 2004, Loeffler married Intercontinental Exchange founder and CEO Jeffrey Sprecher.[8] They reside in Tuxedo Park, Atlanta,[33] in a $10.5 million 15,000-square-foot (1,400 m2) estate named Descante, bought in the most expensive real estate transaction ever recorded in Atlanta.

I wonder why Kemp appointed her? s/

I’m thinking that by making Grennell acting director, it takes the “Trump hates gays” narrative away and it also gets rid of the “prone to blackmail” accusations that the left will throw out there.

I’ve seen her talk a few times. She seems like an entitled airhead.

Why is it at all relevant that someone is openly gay???

That didn’t even need to be mentioned.

She can self fund this special election, and the full election in 2022. Which is probably a large part of the reason Kemp chose her.

Smart move. Collins would be great as DNI. Also Mitch would push his confirmation through immediately so he could eliminate a fight for the senate seat. Doug is smart, loyal and a good man inside and out. Win for Trump, win for Mitch and win for America.

Romney can easily vote not to confirm by pointing out that Grenell is not qualified for the position according to the legislation that created it. Valid cover for anyone in the Senate.

Just saw a clip of Collins on TV saying he is running for Senate and wouldn’t accept the nomination if Trump made it.

Collins not interested per his statement this morning. Running for the Senate. Pence will remain on the ticket for 2020. Pompeo will remain as SecState until after the election. Grenell will move to NSC Director after the election and O’Brien to DNI.
