From what I understand it is pneumonia. Lungs fill with water. I almost died from it at 17. It was a close call. I caught a flu which brought on the pneumonia.

"What actually kills?" Probably pneumonia -- lungs stop functioning
due to fluid build-up. Perhaps secondary bacterial
infection too.

I read that it was possibly an immune system over response causing a cytokine storm.
