MUNICH (AP) — A senior U.S. official said Friday the United States and the Taliban have reached a truce agreement that will take effect “very soon” and could lead to withdrawals of American troops from Afghanistan.

The official said the agreement for a seven-day “reduction in violence” to be followed by the start of all-Afghan peace talks within 10 days is “very specific” and covers the entire country, including Afghan government forces. There were indications a formal announcement could come as early as the weekend.

The official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss the matter and spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the Taliban had committed to a halt in roadside and suicide bombings as well as rocket attacks. The official said the U.S. would monitor the truce and determine if there were any violations.

Should the Taliban comply, the “reduction in violence” agreement would be followed by the signing of an agreement that would initiate peace negotiations that include all Afghan sides.

A Taliban official familiar with the deal said the second agreement would be signed on Feb. 29 and that the inter-Afghan dialogue would begin on Mar. 10. The officials said Germany and Norway have offered to host the talks but there has been no decision on the venue.

That Taliban official added that the withdrawal of foreign troops would start gradually and would be phased over 18 months.

No, but that isn't the point. We didn't create Afghanistan either. It is an amalgamation of warring tribes created by a long since departed colonial empire. Just because the Taliban hold the largest swath of territory (roughly one third) is no reason to give then the rest.

Ever heard of the Northern Alliance? They were the ones who helped us and tried to warn us. There is more information about them on my Freeper page.

Tribally, they have far more in common with Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan and would make the place more stable if subdivided accordingly. None of these three are model western democracies. But, unlike the Taliban, they have no history of exporting terrorism and, in fact, gave us bases to attack the Taliban.

Almost 20 years in that S@#thole. Enough. Think about it. You could have become a NYC cop and retired , with the time spent there!!!! 2 tactical nukes in the beginning would have solve everything. We would not have lost so many valuable live( on our side). The President should have everyone in country pack up and leave. Leave a small QRF in Iraq... Let the B52s and B2s do the rest, when necessary.
