MUNICH (AP) A senior U.S. official said Friday the United States and the Taliban have reached a truce agreement that will take effect very soon and could lead to withdrawals of American troops from Afghanistan.
The official said the agreement for a seven-day reduction in violence to be followed by the start of all-Afghan peace talks within 10 days is very specific and covers the entire country, including Afghan government forces. There were indications a formal announcement could come as early as the weekend.
The official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss the matter and spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the Taliban had committed to a halt in roadside and suicide bombings as well as rocket attacks. The official said the U.S. would monitor the truce and determine if there were any violations.
Should the Taliban comply, the reduction in violence agreement would be followed by the signing of an agreement that would initiate peace negotiations that include all Afghan sides.
A Taliban official familiar with the deal said the second agreement would be signed on Feb. 29 and that the inter-Afghan dialogue would begin on Mar. 10. The officials said Germany and Norway have offered to host the talks but there has been no decision on the venue.
That Taliban official added that the withdrawal of foreign troops would start gradually and would be phased over 18 months.

Again? What # is this?
The beginning of the end came when Woodrow Wilson decided that foreign policy should be based on idealism as opposed to national interests.
Don’t assume Troops are happy about this development. I know my Marine Capt. Nephew was not when Trump tried to get this done a year or so back.
Can’t wait for the commies, leftists, neocons and war mongers to say this is terrible and a foreign policy failure.
Have you ever been in a Turkish prison?
Once the fundamental Muslims, in this case the TALIBAN, get us Infidels out of Afghanistan they can go after the Infidel collaborating Afghan Govt., and retake the country. - Tom
Right. Then they can return it to its proper state of barbarism, as allah meant it to be.
I expect the TALIBAN to go after the Muslim heretics who have sided with us Infidels against Allah.
Nobody likes turncoats and traitors, especially when a religious war is going on, like Muslims vs us Infidels. -Tom
Exactly, but what a horrible waste of our good people. George Bush’s useless war for nothing.
Didn’t President Trump have something to do with this?
I don’t give a damn if the troops are happy about it or not. The troops serve this country, not the other way around. This war has been a tremendous drain of resources on this country, no national interest is served by remaining there. Time to come home!
*Another word for cease fire. Worthless. The other side is raving maniacs ready, able and willing and to die for Allah. They've been doing this for a thousand years at least.
It's the EU's problem now and has been for a while. For the US, Mexico grows more poppies than Afghan, and China's fentanyl is even undercutting that market.
This should work all the way to December.
Oh They Learned a lesson alright. The Question is what lesson?
You forget. Afghanistan was 0bamas The Good War. 0bama said Iraq was Bushs War For Oil.
Both of them are at fault. Democrats love wars, because it silences criticism of the government and enables them to mess with our rights and increase the power of the state. The Bush family a bunch of RINOs. GWB thought he was such a stud to start a war he didn’t have to participate in. I didn’t see any offspring of these neocon warmnongers going off to war.
To Post #34.
It is past time for FR’s to accept that we can mention the fact that “the religion of peace” has to be considered before a shooting war will ever permanently end. I will pay more attention to peace talks when I see Muslim clerics, on TV, declaring the parts of the Koran that have been modernized.
