After conservatives slammed her comments, the progressive firebrand tweeted a NBC News video of Martin Luther King criticizing the concept of bootstrapping for African-Americans. The civil rights leader argued slavery, segregation, and stigmatization left many of them "bootless."

"I believe we ought to do all we can and seek to lift ourselves by our own bootstrap," King said in the clip. However, he added, "It's a cruel jest to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself up by his own bootstraps."

One of the best parts of being an American is no matter your background, your challenges or any immutable characteristic you may possess, you have the opportunity at any point to forge a path for your and your family’s success. For the innumerable people who have done this despite incredible challenges, great odds or with a few dollars in their pocket, we call this “bootstrapping.”

But, earlier week, bootstrapping came under attack from a frequent detractor from success, numbers and general reality, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She lamented, ““It’s a physical impossibility to lift yourself up by a bootstrap … it’s physically impossible. The whole thing is a joke.”

While she may not like the way the metaphor’s use has been changed over time, the reality remains that bootstrapping is not a joke — it’s something that is a source of pride for Americans. But, she doubled-down on the backlash, trying to make her point using a statistic that 60 percent of the wealth is inherited.

I countered this with facts, which is my go-to strategy. If the 60 percent inheritance stat is correct, that means that with $98 trillion in wealth in this country, if 40 percent was bootstrapped, that would be $39.2 trillion worth of first-generation bootstrapped wealth. That’s hardly something to scoff at, given that it’s more than 4.5 times the entire wealth of our neighbors to the north, Canada, and more wealth than every other country in the world except China.

AOC’s statements also ignore that the inherited wealth was, in fact, previously bootstrapped by previous generations. If you created wealth, whether it is a home, a family business or your bank account, wouldn’t you want the choice of what to do with It — such as passing it to your family — vs. being forced to give it to the government?

But, as facts don’t often sway people the way storytelling and emotions do, I instead asked people to share their stories on Twitter in this thread and under the hashtag #Ibootstrapped.

The stories are beyond inspirational and show the American power and spirit better than any facts and statistics ever could.

People need a little background here.

This has been what they have been teaching people at the University level for years. I first heard this 8 years ago from my Daughter. She stated that “It’s a myth that people can work hard and help themselves, studies show that people are essentially born into a class”

This was during the time of Obama. Social Studies majors, teachers, Catholic Schools, were already preaching this new theory that had become public less than a year before. The used this example to push Socialism (You know it better as Communism lite). The basic premise is that Capitalism doesn’t work.

Problem is, Capitalism does work. The highs and lows of economy, that Keynesian economics tried to eliminate, are just natural sinusoidal changes seen in any biological system or predator-prey relationship.

Socialists believe that ‘pulling yourself up’ just doesn’t happen. Yet, we stand in a nation that has “pulled itself up” from Wilderness. We stand among people that have built the greatest nation on earth, adhering to this principle. When confronted with this reality something odd happens.

They get angry and call you a liar. They call you a racist. They tell you that you are stupid and they mock you. They are certain that you are wrong......but can’t figure out how to pay back their responsibilities.....their student loans.

People don’t like to hear the truth. Like children, people scream that the world isn’t fair......and they are correct. Their is much randomness in the Universe, and working hard isn’t a guarantee of success and being a Socialist isn’t a guarantee of failure for an individual. I say this one thing that I call self evident: While ‘Bootstrapping’ isn’t a guarantee of success, it puts you in a position to succeed, and I know few people that are unable to take care of themselves who adhere to this principle. Socialism destroys nations, prosperity, and ALWAYS fails with time.

AOC is just repeating what she was taught by “Scholars”. I am just saying what life has taught me.

AOC imagines herself as some type of manager. The term Firebrand is not apt in this case.

To my thinking AOC is more like a seagull manager. She flies into a room makes a lot of noise, S**** on everything, and then leaves.

However, it’s difficult to imagine that AOC manages anything at all. She doesn’t have the experience to manage the room-to-room congressional chocolate milk cart service, let alone these grandiose projections.
