Virginia’s Recent Extremism a Warning Sign for Other States
The Daily Signal ^ | January 27, 2020 | Jarrett Stepman

The Old Dominion is trending in an ominous direction, and it’s a problem for the whole country.

On Monday, the Virginia General Assembly ratified the Equal Rights Amendment. Advocates of the ERA have argued that Virginia is the 38th and final state needed to add it to the Constitution, though the legal argument for that is dubious.

Nevertheless, if the ERA were to become law, it would almost certainly provide the legal basis to enshrine left-wing social dogmas nationwide, among other negative consequences.

Other states should take note: No matter how conservative your state has been in the past, you’re just one leftist legislature away from radical change.

But there are signs of hope.

The massive pro-Second Amendment protest in Richmond, Virginia, on Jan. 20, which drew more than 20,000 people, signaled that many Virginians are waking up to the radicalism of the newly empowered Democratic majority in the state legislature.

It would be wrong, however, to suppose that gun owners are the only Virginians in the crosshairs of the new powers that be.

The reality is that tussles between large swaths of Virginians and their lawmakers may become more frequent as the state moves sharply to the left—which has occurred for a variety of reasons. Among them is the phenomenal growth of the Washington “blob” that continues to ooze out farther and farther into suburban Virginia.

The values of the Washington, D.C., progressive elites are simply becoming pervasive and now dominate in Richmond. And the result of this blue takeover has been a tidal wave of policies that signal Virginia’s new direction.

But gun control isn’t the only initiative on the liberal agenda.

Though the ratification is unlikely to pass legal muster, it generally shows the direction Virginia is heading.

There’s a Constitutional and historical remedy for it.

Takes balls and guts, but it’s there nonetheless.

The ratification period for the ERA expired decades ago.

Also, a few states which originally ratified the amendment, rescinded their ratifications within the time period for ratification of the amendment.

Both of those issues will have to be hashed out in court, if the liberals choose to take this merely symbolic approval of the equal rights amendment to court.

I gave up reading or watching science fiction partly because I hated the realistic dystopia (as well as the far leftist tilt of 90% of mag.editors and authors).

Now the horrors of such things as VA being Dem and all the above stuff is being brought into reality anyway.

The issue was hashed out in federal court in NOW v. Idaho, and the court rendered a decision: The ERA died in March 1979, and the three-year extension that Congress attempted was executed by the wrong process and thus was unconstitutional.

Neither the Circuit Court of Appeals nor the Supreme Court wished to hear appeals of the NOW ruling. What Virginia has done in ratifying is just virtue signaling.

That’s what I thought. If the rescinded ratifications count then an after the closing bell “yes” goes into the waste basket, right?

But imagine the political courage for males to say in new votes in legislative bodies “no, I’m voting to end my career by not pushing women’s feminist rights. I’ll be able to spend more time with my family now that I will never be elected again in my lifetime.”

I remember when the ERA was first touted in the 80's, the proponents swore up and down and every which way it would NOT mandate allowing boys to participate in girls sports, nor allow men to use women's restrooms. HA!

Media typically making a mountain out of a mole hill. It’s one Texas house seat in Fort Bend county a suburb of liberal Houston. ONE SEAT that’s it.

...Oh Really?:

Democrat Eliz Markowitz, an education specialist, faces Republican Gary Gates, a self-funded businessman, in Tuesday’s runoff to replace Rep. John Zerwas, a moderate Republican who is not running for re-election.

Markowitz, the only Democrat in the race, won 39.1 percent of the vote in the November election. Gates received 28.4 percent, while three other Republicans split the remainder of the vote.

“No matter how conservative your state has been in the past, you’re just one leftist legislature away from radical change”.

Yah think?
Already happened here in Nevada.

D’s got away with ignoring the state constitution, to push through their agenda.
My main question for R’s at the Lincoln Day Dinner is going to be, What is the point of having a state constitution if the governor and legislature may ignore it with impunity?
Since you allowed this without making any apparent effort to see the laws enforced why should I continue to support you?

And no, “’Cause we are better than the alternative” is NOT a sufficient answer.
At this point they are NOT “better”, just enablers.
Yes, I am still steamed!
