Texas House special election to gauge suburban mood
The Hill ^ | 01 27 2020 | Reid Wilson

Voters in the fast-growing Houston suburbs will offer a rare glimpse into a critical segment of the electorate on Tuesday when they elect a new state representative, in what could prove an early bellwether ahead of the 2020 presidential elections.

The district leans Republican; President Trump took 53 percent of the vote there in 2016, and Sen. Ted Cruz (R) won it by 3 points in 2018.

But the race to fill a seat that became vacant when the Republican incumbent, state Rep. John Zerwas, left to take a university job has become a magnet for outside Democratic groups who hope to send a message that Texas and its treasure trove of electoral votes are in play.

Democratic groups have invested more than $600,000 in Eliz Markowitz, an education specialist making her second run for public office this year. Markowitz scored 39 percent of the vote in a November all-party primary to secure a slot in the runoff.

Republicans split the remaining 61 percent of the vote in that November primary, tempering Democratic hopes for a big win.

“There's a substantial gap between Republican votes and Democratic votes. It is only a competitive race because the energy is on the Dem side. It's still a very tough race,” said Mustafa Tameez, a veteran Houston Democratic strategist. “There’s a lot of energy on the Democratic side, and people can smell victory. So they’re coming to the table and investing more.”

This looks like another election where Democrats, inside and outside the state, are desperate for a win to prove voters have turned against Trump.

Interesting. There were no Hill of trash articles on the convincing GOP wins in KY, PA and CT last week, including a GOP hold in a D+8 super wealthy suburban seat. Why?

Leftists have California, not maybe or could be or probably.
Done deal.

We may or may not hold off the urban area leftists, the newly arrived ex CA voters, the burgeoning illegals and the uncertain suburban women who feel queasy about Trump’s harsh tweets and name calling-—to hold Texas. For a while.

AZ must be held, too.

We cannot allow more Virginia’s or bye bye USA.

Texas House Special election to gauge suburban mood. . . .

unless the democrats lose, in which case you won’t hear another damn thing about this election, much less it being a gauge of anything.

Yes, what the heck happened with Virginia?

Why weren't Republicans warning people about the trend?

Did they know? If they knew why didn't they raise the red flag?

If they didn't know, why were they so out of the loop they didn't know what was happening?

A state legislature race is gonna foretell the Presidential result in November? Gimme a break. The only “bellwether” I recognize is Ohio...a large,Midwestern state that's voted “correctly” (that is,for the winner) in every Presidential election since 1964.

Why weren't Republicans warning people about the trend?
Because they liked the trend.

Did they know?
Yes.

If they knew why didn't they raise the red flag?
They didn't want the blowback.

I’m fairly certain the Democrats have lost Virginia for the forseeable future. They got power and immediately went to tyranny. It won’t be tolerated. And there will be action.

They didn’t run any candidates in 25% of the districts. It was impossible to hold when they surrendered at least 8 districts for free.
