Wouldn’t be the first time a government lab developed and then released deadly disease. In Siberia, an outbreak of anthrax was blamed on melting permafrost (i.e., climate change). But, was actually due to a Russian biowarfare lab. In the U.S., anthrax-infested letters were blamed on right-wing terrorists. But, was actually due to a research scientist gone mad at Fort Detrick, Maryland.
At this point, what difference does it make?

Maybe, but I think the more prevalent explanation is the more likely one - the practice of people in China to eat just about any animal. Apparently the open-air market in Hunan was selling dogs, wolves, civet cats, and otters (both alive and dead) for consumption - no checks for disease or cleanliness. The Chinese government has now closed it down.
