That said, the responses demonstrate the level of distrust U.S. university faculty have earned considering how intuitive it is to believe U.S. faculty could have been penned by letter.

Yes. I thought the same thing until I read the article. Many us profs are saying the same thing though they did not sign the letter.
Iran has 80 million people. And its a highly literate, educated society. Why in the world would you doubt they have a measly 6000 professors? They undoubtedly have tens of thousands of professors.
Iran has a population of about 82 million.

I think 5,000 professors is stretching what we think of as professors, but the number doesn’t seem too way off
