I understand your point, but “aircraft spotting” (like train spotting) is a thing.
There are people with the time and inclination to watch aircraft come and go from airports. YouTube is full of their videos.
Now, whether that sort of thing goes on in Iran...
...Or it might be video from someone’s SO watching their plane take off.
According to the current existing evidence it appears the the Iranians have clearly stepped on their own penis.
BTW What are the Ukrainian officials saying about Iran bombing one of their Planes?
If the US would have returned fire into Iran that night, want to bet they would have blamed this on Trump and the scum Rats would have gone right along with them.
After reading some comments here I would suggest we do not get too smug in our assessment of the Iranian defense.
Some of us are old enough to remember events from years ago.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Air_Flight_655
In 1988 an American warship shot down a passenger plane.
The Iranians were expecting a response from the US and may have removed the “safety” before they should have, but these things happen in the fog of comment.
As a young infantryman in Viet Nam I was on a patrol when we were fired on and we returned fire only to discover it was another American patrol. Death by friendly fire more often then you may think.
And was the maintenance crew new temporary employees?
If he fires one, well fire one.
FIRE ONE!
That incident still isn’t clear, it wasn’t ever clearly traced to operator or equipment error.
Some still think the pilot had a death wish.
We have many satellites over Iran. They are designed to detect ground radar and launch signatures.
............
The Tor SA-15 missile is vehicle launched. Up to 4 vehicles are controlled by a command vehicle.
...........
The command vehicle, only, has target aquisition radar and can be linked to other ground radar such as the Tehran airport. As the launchers dont broadcast aquisition radar they are safe from our HARM missiles.
............
Once the launcher receives a fire command is turns on its engagement radar and launches 5-8 seconds later.
...........
The system is intended to be automatic.
Some still think the pilot had a death wish.
Beside the point. My point was that inside a war zone accidents like this can happen.
“Why were 63 Canadians on such a flight?”
Probably they were Iranians who had resettled in Canada, and were back home visiting, and trying to get out of the country before a new war started.
“The Bedford Incident.” Very good book and movie.
This was the Supreme Leader assassinating 175+ innocent people. At least Trump took out some real high value targets, not innocent civilians. Wonder if the media notices the distinction? NAW
The Vincennes was actively engaging Iranian Patrol Boats, pursuing them into Iranian territorial waters. Adrenaline was high and additional action anticipated. People reacted to what they expected, instead of what they actually saw.
I'm sure the Iranians who shot down the 737 were similarly amped on adrenaline and bravado following the attacks on our bases, and for a short time after, they were likely jubilant that they had heroically defended their country. Both incidents were tragic. I hope the Iranians learn from this, as we did over 30 years ago.
What planes took off before and after the Ukranian airliner left the ground?
What other planes were at 8000 feet elevation?
Get passenger lists of all planes in the neighborhood.

Tragically it was the cheapest flight route for Iranian-Canadians to return to Canada via Kiev and Toronto. The stories are being posted on Canadian media about many of the victims who were students and professors returning to Canadian universities after Christmas holidays. Several universities across Canada lost staff and/or students. There were 27 of the 67 total victims just from Edmonton alone, which has a big Iranian community. The University of Alberta in Edmonton was hardest hit.
Do you happen to have a link? Thanks.
Almost immediately after the crash I read several times about how there was a No-Fly order in effect at that time.
But I’ve not seen that mentioned for several days.
Was the 737 flying in the face of a No Fly order?
