CNN reportedly agreed Tuesday to settle a $275 million lawsuit filed by Covington Catholic student Nicholas Sandmann over the networks coverage of his viral encounter with an elderly Native American activist.
The details of the settlement were not disclosed during proceedings at the federal courthouse in Covington, Kentucky, according to Fox19 in Cincinnati.
The teens family filed lawsuits against CNN, NBCUniversal and the Washington Post over reporting on the January 2019 incident in which Nicholas was filmed standing face-to-face with Omaha elder Nathan Phillips as he played a drum on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

I hope the settlement amount was painful to CNN.
From what I understand the lawyer representing Sandmann is one of the top in libel law. I am sure he got CNN to cut a nice check obviously it is not going to be close to $275 MM.
Bezos and NBC-Universal better have their checkbooks open.
The media put that kid through hell. I’m glad his future is secure because of it. Hopefully these media outlets will try to get the facts before their attempt to ruin someones life.
I’m sure he didn’t get the 275 million and no side admits wrongdoing and the case is closed. If it were me I would not be bought. Lawyers prefer a quick settlement. Get in get out take the money and run.
Any other networks in the suit?
the part I don’t like is the not admitting fault part. what they did is not a statutory crime and therefore the 5A does not apply.
Another story you won’t hear accurately (or at all) reported on CNN...
Hopefully well into the eight figures.
“the part I dont like is the not admitting fault part.”
Where did you get that part?
Settle with all the defendants except one to get a nice payday, and then get your pound of flesh by not settling with the last defendant and seeing it through.
You’re playing with house money, at that point.
Chances are that CNN settled for low six figures at most, plus lawyer’s fees, which would be another six figure check.
Nothing less than $10 M, hopefully $100M.
I think that your estimates are too low.
The fact that CNN settled means that other media entities will most likely settle as well. What attorney Lin Wood did very successfully was set the precedent to settle for his client. Well done, Atty. Wood and well deserved to Nick.
Im sure it was worth much more than that for CNN to settle before discovery began.
