Every Muslim wants to be head honcho. This includes the PM that Iran helped elevate to his post. He’s not interested in being Iran’s ventriloquist dummy. Currently, Iran sorta kinda calls the shots in Iraq, but not completely. Uncle Sam counterbalances Iran. The US can be overbearing on certain issues (i.e. don’t stand aside as our embassy is being attacked, and don’t conduct mass killings of argumentative civilians), but is generally pretty OK with just about anything they do. Iran pretty much wants to dictate everything they do. No question that even Iraqis elevated to power by Iran would prefer Uncle Sam as an honest broker. We’re just not that hard to get along with. Whereas with Uncle Sam out, Iraqi leaders become little more than Iranian puppets.
