American-led coalition forces have paused operations against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria as officials brace for a strike by Iran.
President Trump authorized a drone strike on Thursday that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, one of Iran’s highest-ranking and most powerful officials. Iran has vowed retaliation for the strike.
Forces led by the United States in the region are now focused on preparing for a potential attack and have temporarily stopped pursuing ISIS targets.
In a statement, the Combined Joint Task ForceOperation Inherent Resolve said, "Repeated rocket attacks over the last two months by elements of Kata'ib Hezbollah have caused the death of Iraqi Security Forces personnel and a U.S. civilian."
It continued, "As a result we are now fully committed to protecting the Iraqi bases that host Coalition troops. This has limited our capacity to conduct training with partners and to support their operations against Daesh and we have therefore paused these activities, subject to continuous review."
The coalition said it remains "ready" to resume operations against ISIS but did not provide a timeline for when the effort would restart.

If I were to guess. Many of the fighters for ISIS were comprised of former Sunni Iraqi military working as paid for ISIS fighters, and are out of favor with the new Shiite Iraq majority government.
Seems that Iraq is set up for another civil war with a Sunni Shiite conflict forthcoming.
President Trump appears to be setting the table for this conflict to proceed in the most favorable terms for the United States.
Maybe even pulling forces out of inner Iraq and intervening only from the outskirts as needed.
Having Iran control Iraq is not an option. And bolstering Sunni and Kurd’s in the area to better confront Iran will allow the local population to control their own destiny with minimal American intervention and concurs with Trumps middle east doctrine.
Great, now we take out their nuclear facilities.
Why stop pushing them when we have them on the run or dead? It’s like stopping the Christmas bombings of North Vietnam maybe a week early when we could have had total victory had we pushed just a bit longer and had the balls to tell the NVA, you lose.

Lots of diseases were “wiped out” only to spring back w/o constant vigilance...
They were effectively wiped out to the point it would take killing a much higher percentage of people who ain’t with them than the remaining viruses.
Makes it sound like if we are not leading the fight their military just folds. If true they deserve to live as slaves to these demons.
