It doesn’t matter if we should be there or not. The fact of the matter is that we ARE there. That is the circumstance that President Trump has to deal with.

And these strikes send a message to Iran, and ANYONE else who even considers attacking any other US Embassy.

I would also add that none of us have access to the intelligence that lead to this decision. General Petraeus, who is not known to be a Trump supporter, recently pointed this out.

There are some reports that Soliemani was planning attacks in Iraq that would involve taking US hostages.

What would you do to prevent a repeat what happened in 1979?

Actually, the U.S. should be sending a much stronger message to IRAQ. The responsibility for protecting an embassy ultimately falls on the host country, doesn't it?

All reports I've seen indicate that the mutants storming the embassy were Iranian-backed Iraqi militants, not Iranians. And what were those Iranian military leaders doing in Iraq when they were smoked by the Hellfire missiles, anyway? I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that they were not invaders, but were operating freely in Iraq because they were welcomed there with open arms.

1. Remove all embassy personnel.

2. Booby-trap the embassy and vacate it.

I would also add that none of us have access to the intelligence that lead to this decision. General Petraeus, who is not known to be a Trump supporter, recently pointed this out.

That's a fair point, but after what I've seen from our State Dept. and intelligence agencies over the last 3+ years I'd say any "intelligence" they provide is totally worthless and is almost certainly being used to promote a political agenda that has nothing to do with the best interests of the citizens of the United States.

So anytime that some folks become unhappy with the US, it is okay for them to attack one of our emabassies, and, we, seeking not to offend, should just pack up and leave.

You can’t be serious.

It probably is a good idea to reduce our presence in that part of the world, but it cannot and should not be done on those terms.

When a bunch of mutants storm a U.S. embassy in a foreign country, one of two things is true:

1. The government of that country is hostile to the U.S.

2. The government of that country is not hostile to the U.S., but it is incapable of protecting U.S. citizens and diplomatic assets from that country’s own citizens.

There are only these two possibilities here, and either one is indicative of a situation where the U.S. shouldn’t have normal diplomatic relations with the country in question.

[You sound like one of those CIA/State Dept. bureaucrats testifying before Adam Schitt’s committee.

Since when does “an abiding goal of U.S. foreign policy” outweigh the interests of U.S. citizens here at home? I thought we elected Donald Trump because we got tired of that globalist sh!t.]

They were merely carrying out the stated goals of their political masters, and ultimately the voters who put them in office. That you don’t like those goals doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

I am hoping Soleimani's rapid involuntary departure AS WELL AS HIS SUCCESSOR'S will trigger a return to Iraq's former self albeit unstable as it was..

Jimmeh Carter started this mess, then along came Bush, then B. Hussein Obama and made it TEN TIMES WORSE by laying the groundwork for Iran's THEFT of Iraq! First with our troop withdrawal, then with a BILLION+ $$$ GIFT to Iran to take over Iraq.

Although we are seeing EXACTLY what we predicted on FR which is the Deep State set-up of Trump action against Iran, Trump saw an opportunity to REMOVE Soleimani from Iraq and did so promptly.

I found an article about Qais al-Khazali.

https://www.mideastcenter.org/post/who-is-qais-al-khazali-the-iraqi-militia-leader-sanctioned-by-the-us-on-december-6

Qais al-Khazali (قيس الخزعلي) was targeted by US sanctions on December 6, 2019. "The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated three leaders of Iran-backed militias in Iraq that opened fire on peaceful protests, killing dozens of innocent civilians. OFAC designated Qais al-Khazali, Laith al-Khazali, and Husayn Falih ‘Aziz al-Lami pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13818 for their involvement in serious human rights abuse in Iraq. Additionally, OFAC designated Iraqi millionaire businessman Khamis Farhan al-Khanjar al-Issawi for bribing government officials and engaging in corruption at the expense of the Iraqi people."

So many interesting incentive patterns in this mess... Thank God Trump opened the spigot on American energy - we don't need the ME...

We live in interesting times, 2 fer, no Iranian oil hurts china the most.

Indeed we do...and yes it does...I seem to recall a historical precedent illustrating what interfering with a nation's oil imports can lead to... In Aug 1941, Roosevelt "embargoed the export of such grades of oil as still were in commercial flow to Japan." And the rest , so they say, is history.
