What's next: Patients insured through Obamacare worry after court ruling
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | December 19, 2019 | Kris B. Mamula

An appellate court ruling that struck down a key pillar of Obamacare on Wednesday amped up anxiety about the future of the law that brought health insurance to millions of Americans.

Court appeals are likely and experts say the matter probably won’t be resolved for years — creating uncertainty about the protections were built into the Affordable Care Act. Squirrel Hill resident Amy Raslevich is among the people worrying about the future of the law.

“I’m fighting cancer,” the 48-year-old University of Pittsburgh doctoral student said. “I shouldn’t have to fight Congress and the president to stay alive.”

In a 2-1 decision, the New Orleans Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday ruled that the part of Obamacare requiring most people to have health insurance was unconstitutional. But the court also ordered the trial court in Fort Worth, Texas to reconsider its ruling a year ago that the entire law was invalid.

The government penalty for failing to have health insurance ended this year.

Without a personal mandate requiring coverage, insurance experts say the law would collapse. If healthier people cancel coverage, that would leave only seriously ill — and more costly members — left to insure. To remain solvent, insurance requires a pool of both healthy and ill members.

Even without such changes, it’s taken awhile for plans offered through the ACA marketplace to find pricing that works for the insurers offering them. Pennsylvania consumers who enrolled this year faced an average 4% rate increase for individual market plans and a 9.7% increase for small group plans. The 4% individual rate increase compares with trending national increases of 5-8%.

Dude, you should have fought for a job with health insurance instead of going for a PhD at 48. You have at least a Masters degree in something and unless you are allergic to showing up for work anyone can get a job today. And how are you paying for that PhD? Perhaps real health insurance would have been a wiser investment. Sorry if I sound harsh but he gets no sympathy from this 4 time cancer survivor (who is not on Obama care).

I guess I'm not seeing how the court decision, or the president is causing a problem for this cancer patient.

If it reaches SCOTUS, Roberts and Kavanaugh will side with the liberals and reverse the 5th Circuit ruling.

I guess you got cancer genes from your parents, maybe they can chip in for your treatments.

If her story is true, then she could get a full time job at ANY health facility with (usually) excellent benefits.

The medical field is so competitive that increased benefits is one of the perks used to attract qualified candidates.

There are exceptions but unless she is into only research, then where there is a will there is a way.

Too sick to hold a full time job? Then too sick to diligently follow a doctoral path.

A 48-year-old doctoral student who expects free health care.
The ultimate example of the “You Go Girl!” culture.
Anyone who pursues a doctorate at that age had better be independently wealthy and doing it purely for the love of the subject.

Your lack of empathy is appalling and does not front conservatism well.

Must we reinforce the worst stereotypes?

An appeal of Wednesday’s court ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court seems likely, which could leave the matter unsettled for years,

Hardly years. The challenge to Obamacare filed by the Republican states is in front of the Supreme Court now. They could very well kill Obamacare in June.

The amusing thing is that University of Pittsburgh offers FREE health insurance to students. As a grad student, he has free coverage, and can buy coverage to cover his wife for $382/month. I don’t think that’s going to change.

If one has the money to pursue a Doctoral degree they have enough money to purchase their own insurance plan. Another parasite using taxpayers money to pay for their needs while they spend their own money one their wants
