Senators predict deal will be reached for impeachment trial

Senators from both sides of the aisle appeared optimistic Sunday a deal would be reached by party leaders to hold an impeachment trial in the Senate once lawmakers return after the holidays.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer failed to reach a negotiation last week over the rules and procedures for the likely trial, with Democrats demanding the chamber call witnesses.

Mr. McConnell, though, is insisting President Trump have the same impeachment process afforded to President Clinton where the Senate agreed to hear from the House managers presenting their argument supporting the articles of impeachment and allow the president’s team to respond before the senators wrestle with the issue of witnesses.

“I think there will be an agreement and this trial will go forward,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar told CNN’s “State of the Union.”

All of the negotiations, though, remain at a standstill while lawmakers are away for the holiday break, and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi hangs onto the articles of impeachment passed Wednesday charging the president with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The California Democrat said she is waiting to pass the charges to the Senate until she is guaranteed there will be a fair trial — with more witnesses. Democrats have said they want to hear from Mr. Trump’s chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and his former national security adviser John Bolton, among others.

“I frankly don’t think the speaker has the right to do this,” said Sen. Roy Blunt, Missouri Republican.

“Once the House has spoken, the speaker doesn’t get the decision as to whether or not she transmits that decision to the Senate. In my view I think we will have this all handled once we get back in January,” Mr. Blunt told CNN.

By Monday night, most all of these Senators and staffs will be packing up and leaving. I would have doubt that anything happens this week, and it might be after 1 January before they discuss matters.

Looks like the Dems are going to try to deny due process in the Senate just as they did in the House.

And he needs to stick with that like glue, and chant it over and over on every news channel, particularly if it seems that Dems are resisting it in any way.

It’s a script.

They have “surprise” testimony which would not survive the weeks between House and Senate, they all know what it is and they all know what they are going to do.

What a joke. This bitch could care less about a fair trial for PDJT.

“The California Democrat said she is waiting to pass the charges to the Senate until she is guaranteed there will be a fair trial.”

I think Pelosi is missing the boat here. The fair trial is for the defendant, not the prosecutors.

If they let Pelosi have one millimeter on this they are stupid enough to deserve to be defeated, and I don’t care who they are.

She knows the Senate is holding all the cards now. A “fair trial” in her mind, is when she removes their leverage, and inserts her own rules, into none of her business.

No need for a trial. If so I fear McConnell will give in to the communists Democrats and this trial will be a farist with the Democrats coming out with real talking points in their favor.

What happened to the fact that the house process was so outrageous that it would dismissed upon arrival? The BS impeachment the house conducted is now being treated like it was legitimate

I think every one of the House who voted for the [outrageously illegal and not one iota according to the Constitution] impeachment should be in JAIL for their attempted coup, for theft of services (meanwhile, they were not tending to matters for which they were elected), for character defamation and lying under oath, for starters. Their phony “impeachment” should be publicly ripped up and flushed down a toilet. That is the severity which should be shown to these filthy traitors to our country. And, their entire estates should be confiscated to begin reparations to the American people for the tens of millions of dollars they wasted on this nonsense, and for trying to fund their presidential campaigns by getting rid of their chief opponent on our dime.
