Sisolak promised to ban assault rifles. Now, he admits he doesn’t know what that term means

If you want a perfect encapsulation of the false promise of gun control and the duplicity of many of its advocates, look at Gov. Steve Sisolak.

When Sisolak was running for governor last year, he put out an ad describing his reaction to the Oct. 1 massacre. As somber music played, he described walking through the shooting site and starting the victims’ fund.

“But, you know, money won’t stop the next massacre,” Sisolak said in the ad. “Not when Donald Trump protects the NRA, and Adam Laxalt won’t enforce background checks. When I’m governor, we’re going to ban assault rifles, bump stocks, silencers.”

The implication was clear. Republicans would rather pander to the gun lobby than protect innocent people. Sisolak, his voice filled with moral condescension, would — by banning “assault rifles” — save lives.

Just one problem. Sisolak now admits he doesn’t even know what an assault rifle is.

Just one problem. Sisolak now admits he doesn’t even know what an assault rifle is.

“I don’t have enough of an intimate knowledge about exactly what an assault rifle is,” he said recently when asked by the Nevada Independent if he’d pursue an assault weapons ban in the 2021 legislative session. “You know, I’ve met with folks, I’m trying to become more educated. It’s not the look of a weapon that makes an assault rifle. Is it the velocity? Is it the expanded capacity to rapid-fire? I mean, those are the kinds of things. Once you ban one thing, you ban product A, they come up with product B. That’s going to be the same thing that product A did. All you’re doing is making more money for gun manufacturers.”

Oh. Now he tells us. His plan was such a load of garbage that he doesn’t even know what he was talking about. Even for a politician, the dishonesty here is staggering. Sisolak politicized the largest mass shooting in modern American history to push an incoherent sound bite.

Definition of an assault rifle;

Any rifle which is used to assault someone.

I had many rifles prior to the boating accident. I know none of them weren’t assault rifles because they all just hung quietly on the wall and never shot anyone.

While pdjt’s he’ll protecting our rights is appreciated , the whole purpose of the 2A is that American citizens can ( and all) protect our own rights.

***by banning “assault rifles”***

I still remember 1962 when the politicians “ONLY” wanted to register handguns. “Rifles will not be affected!”

In 1981, actress Lee Grant went on Good Morning America and poled holes in the air while yelling...”THE NRA IS A RIFLE ORGANIZATION! THEY SHOULD GIVE UP THEIR HANDGUNS AND THEY CAN KEEP THEIR RIFLES!”

In 1984, they made a grab for the rifles, and missed, but showed their hand. Now gun owners know we are always up against a stacked deck.

A lying politician? Shocked, I’m so shocked.

Sadly, it is becoming the rule, not the exception.

The author kind of missed the point by himself equating the term "assault rifle" with "assault weapon."

An assault rifle is a true military weapon, capable of burst or fully-automatic fire. And those already are illegal/extremely difficult to get.

It's "assault weapon" that has no true functional definition.

Actually, both terms were coined by anti-gun propagandist and have no basis in military terminology.

There are only battle rifles and civilian rifles.

A modern battle rifle is capable of fully automatic fire.

A civilian rifle is not capable of fully automatic fire.

Nonsense. We the People have an inherent God-given right to keep and bear arms. ANY arms. The idea that military has some sort of superior right to arms with respect to We the People is anathema to basic human rights and to the American Constitution.

That’s not true. The U.S. military has referred to the M-16 family, etc., as “assault rifles” for many decades.

Great post, but there's no need to be testy about it. We're all on the same team here.
