House passes USMCA deal, giving Trump big win on trade

The House on Thursday backed a new trade agreement with Mexico and Canada in a 385-41 vote, giving President Trump a big bipartisan victory and sending the NAFTA replacement to the Senate for consideration early in 2020.

Democrats, who control the House, approved the United States-Mexico- Canada Agreement, or USMCA, more than a year after President Trump secured the deal with our neighbors to the south and north.

Voting against the measure were 38 Democrats, two Republicans and one independent...

(President) Trump made tearing up NAFTA a hallmark of his presidential run in 2016 as he tried to win over working-class voters in states such as Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

“Critics said it couldn’t be done, but he made it happen. Another promise made, another promise kept,” said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)...

The International Trade Commission projected in April that the agreement would boost the US economy by $68 billion and add 176,000 jobs six years after taking effect.

Some of the biggest impacts would be felt in the US automotive industry, where workers earn an average of at least $16 an hour, and the commission found that it would create 30,000 jobs in American auto-parts plants.

I wonder what poison pill the RATs put in it.
Is it the final version? or does the Senate have to give it another go?

Another promise made, another promise kept,” said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)...

Note to Dims: his next promise is to return control of the House to its rightful owners.

I believe it is a treaty, not a law

If the ‘rats want a different terms, they need to vote it down and let the president know what they want, and the president will have to get the other countries to sign off on the new terms

They can’t unilaterally “edit” the deal or put stuff in it without the other countries and the president knowing and approving the changes.

That was my understanding from high school anyways

Kudlow says this will add .5 to the gdp and between 200-550 thousand new jobs, YET, my pubbie senator, splatoomey, is going to vote against it.

I worked to get this loser elected, made call, donated time and money, and he turns out to be a real mook.

How can a guy go so squishy?

The last good conservative Senator we had in PA that I can remember was John Heinz, and don't anyone tell me about Santorum.

I met young rick when he was a congress critter, and he was very conservative and I rode the Monday morning USAir flight with him to DC for many years.

He changed when he became a senator, just an other use-ta-be.

Thanks.
I should have read the article.

"The Senate will likely take it up when its members return from the holidays and after dealing with Trump’s impeachment trial."

Labor unions are mostly supporting it so that should give pause.
Pelosi is taking credit for it...go figure.

They are calling it a trade agreement. House has no say in a treaty.
I don't know enough about it - why this needs to be voted on.

Is Pelosi going to send the bill to the Senate, or has she developed a new bad habit?

We learn a little more here.
"Agreement" is the general umbrella that the rest fall under.
A treaty is a particular type of agreement.
Treaties are dealt with by the President and the Senate. House has no say.

USMCA is not just an agreement, it's a trade agreement.
The House does have a say in trade agreements as the Constitution grants Congress the power “To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes.

decent explanation here:
https://www.congressionalinstitute.org/2011/12/12/trade-or-treaty-why-does-the-house-approve-free-trade-agreements/

feds law here - Handbook on Treaties - gotta search for the differences but pretty well defined\explained - hopefully before your head explodes.

FreeRegards.
