On Sunday night, Chuck Schumer made his opening bid to Mitch McConnell in the two leaders' negotiations over the Senate impeachment trial.
Driving the news: Schumer has sent a letter to McConnell in which he asks the Republican leader to call four witnesses who refused to testify before the House impeachment committees.
- The witnesses Schumer has asked for all have direct knowledge of Trump administration decisions concerning the holdup of aid to Ukraine and the requests for investigations of the Bidens and of the origins of the Russia investigation.
- They are: Mick Mulvaney, acting White House chief of staff; John Bolton, former national security adviser; Michael Duffey, associate director for national security, Office of Management and Budget; and Robert Blair, senior adviser to Mulvaney.
- Schumer also proposes that the Senate issue subpoenas "for a limited set of documents that we believe will shed additional light on the administration's decision-making regarding the delay in security assistance funding to Ukraine and its requests for certain investigations to be announced by the government of Ukraine," per the letter obtained by Axios.
Why it matters: The Senate Democratic leader's request — particularly his call for additional impeachment witnesses — may appeal to some moderate Republicans but is sure to meet forceful resistance from President Trump and McConnell.

The Senator should be advised the House has Charged Abuse of Power and Obstruction of Congress. They are the prosecution and shall call only those witnesses which directly relate to those charges.
And, as always, internal White House documents, and inter agency memos which include the White House, and protected by Executive Privilege and will be unavailable.
But the President may call any witness which is related to "Reasonable Belief" that the Biden's were involved in crimes according to US Code as it establishes legal predicate for the request for investigation by Ukraine.
He may also call any witness with knowledge of a corrupt prosecution including those who can testify to political bias. And of course, the principal witness for this is the Blower and whomever he talked to.
POTUS may, at his choosing, produce internal documents and files from any agency, upon proper declassification in his defense.
Since when does the “jury” get to call witnesses?

The truth is what they want has nothing to do with the truth or with justice.

Hey, the dims would not allow any Republican witnesses in their charade so McConell should just tell Shimer to go to hell.
Schumer: “We need these witnesses to establish that President Trump caused the genocide of the Armenians and used that expertise to operate the gas chambers at Auschwitz”.
Nice theory. The unfortunate reality is, Senate Republicans are in the MAJORITY and will probably lend the Dems their tools to build sand castles...

It’s not what they can prove that counts. It’s what they BELIEVE may turn up.... If he’s going to play this game, then McConnell needs to tell the House to take back their Articles of Impeachment and when they finish their job, then they can submit them again and the Senate will take it up and NOT UNTIL THEN! They don’t get to do a “do over” once it gets to the Senate!
The Republicans run the show in the Senate and they need to reverse the tables on the dems - treat them exactly as they were treated in the House hearings! DO NOT GIVE THEM ANYTHING! Or hold them all up so NO ONE goes home for the holiday recess! It’s time to get down and dirty!
It sounds like Schumer is illegally attempting to influence the proceeding.
