A bipartisan defense budget agreement will authorize the creation of the Space Force.

The Space Force will be, like the Army or Air Force, a distinct military service under the Pentagon.

The service will take over space functions from existing services, wielding them into a single independent branch overseen by a Chief of Space Operations.

It’s really happening. A bipartisan budget agreement for 2020 will see the creation of a new branch of the military specifically oriented towards space. The United States Space Force will be the first new service branch in more than 60 years, tasked to ensure America’s freedom to operate in outer space—or take space away from somebody else.

Kind of wild but the author makes an interesting observation in the last paragraph or two. Anyway, I remember when all the liberal pundits and Dems made fun of Trump for suggesting this.

I want to know the real reason we’re getting a space force.

Because it’s not an environment in which we want to play catch-up to China.

Because effective military operations depend on satellite data communications and surveillance technology. Also because our enemies continue to develope killer satellite technology to counteract our capabilities.

If we don’t have the capability yet, we need to put Rods from God in place. And we should not be reluctant to use them. I oppose nation building. I oppose boots on the ground. But devastating the bad guys from space? I’m OK with that.

I would envision it eventually assuming control over the AF portion of NORAD, the launch site at Vandenburg, and possibly part (or all) of NASA. It will also give some General the opportunity to be involved in their favorite past time... creating uniform changes!

Will the B-52 play a prominent role? Will space command do another upgrade to get it into space and beyond?

I believe the Air Force Space Command is going to be the nucleus.

Air Force Space Command bases include: Buckley, Peterson, and Schriever AFBs, Colo.; Los Angeles and Vandenberg AFBs, Calif.; Patrick AFB, Fla. In addition, many geographically separated units span the globe.

AFSPC is comprised of more than 26,000 professionals assigned to 134 locations worldwide.

AFSPC (HQ's Peterson AFB, Colo.) includes:

21st Space Wing, Peterson AFB, Colo.

--Subordinate units:

--6th Space Warning Squadron - Cape Cod AFS, Mass.
--7th Space Warning Squadron - Beale AFB, Calif.
--10th Space Warning Squadron - Cavalier AFS, N.D.
--12th Space Warning Squadron - Thule AB, Greenland
--13th Space Warning Squadron - Clear AFS, Alaska
--Royal Air Force Fylingdales - United Kingdom
--4th Space Control Squadron - Peterson AFB, Colo.
--16th Space Control Squadron - Peterson AFB, Colo.
--20th Space Control Squadron - Eglin AFB, Fla.
--20th Space Control Squadron, Det. 1 - Dahlgren, Va.
--76th Space Control Squadron - Peterson AFB, Colo.
--821st Air Base Group - Thule, Greenland

460th Space Wing Buckley AFB, Colo.

61st Air Base Group, Los Angeles Air Force Station, which includes:

--Subordinate units:

--Space & Missile Systems Center (SMC)
--Military Satellite Communications Systems Directorate
--Global Positioning Systems Directorate
--Space Superiority Systems Directorate
--Launch and Range Systems Directorate
--Infrared Space Systems Directorate
--Defense Weather Systems Directorate
--Satellite Control and Network Systems Division
--Space Logistics Directorate
--Space Radar Office
--Missile Defense Systems Group
--Space Development and Test Directorate (Kirtland AFB, N.M.)

14th Air Force, Vandenberg AFB, Calif. Includes the 30th Space Wing (Launching facilities)

45th Space Wing Patrick AFB, Fla.

50th Space Wing, Schriever AFB, Colo.

Spent my first 8 years in the AFSPC. Cheyenne Mt, NORAD, 6MWS Cape Code AFS, 5DSCS, Woomera, Australia.
