The pending farmworker amnesty drafted by Democrats and business groups is likely to block the development and use of labor-saving machinery throughout the labor-intensive farm sector.
The Democratic Party is offering the agriculture business an endless supply of cheap migrant labor if business executives pressure GOP legislators to approve an amnesty for roughly one million illegal migrants who will likely vote Democrat. The profits-for-amnesty swap is at the center of the Farm Workforce Modernization Act of 2019, which has passed a House committee and is expected to get a floor vote soon.
The Democrats’ amnesty bill also has the support of the United Farm Workers union (UFW), which represents illegal migrant farmworkers. The migrants work long hours, in the open, often for low pay.
But they harvest the crops with methods that have changed little in 10,000 years: Stooping to harvest crops, reaching upwards to pick fruit, and carrying simple tools to dig, weed, or prune. The crude methods are good enough for many farm companies that are under intense pressure to minimize near-term spending on payroll and investment in equipment.
Overseas, farm companies in Israel, Australia, Europe, and South America are investing in labor-saving machinery. Their investments in technology are reducing their need for farm workers and are helping them compete against American farmers.
If the Democrats’ “modernization act” amnesty becomes law, U.S. farm companies will have an unlimited supply of low-wage labor and, so, will face less pressure to keep up the pace with their foreign rivals’ technology.

Gee, I wonder if all of those years ago that these people would have wanted to stop Eli Whitney or John Deere or Cyrus McCormick as to keep all of those slaves busy back then.
There’s plenty of Republican agribusiness owners in the Pajaro Valley and the Central Valley of California, and those SOB’s are the ones who hire the UFW invaders.
Those A-holes just dump the social costs of their Ork workforce on those of us actually paying taxes in those areas.

They don’t wanna buy the machines anyway, as long as they don’t have to pick up the cost for their workers kids, crime, national destruction, etc etc

Here in CA I often purchase freshly grown produce from Japanese farmers.

Half a century ago, maybe longer, cotton in S.E. Missouri was harvested by humans. Most black, but some white, all very poor. Then machines replaced them. Many moved to towns and cities and either got jobs or began a tradition of collecting welfare benefits. At some point the machine becomes cheaper to buy, operate and maintain than the humans.
In California, field-labor strife encouraged the development of machines to harvest crops that used to be picked by hand. In some cases Ag Universities (like Cal Davis) not only developed the machines, but modified the crops to tolerate the harvesting, sometimes decreasing the flavor as a consequence. There was pressure by the pols to force the public universities from doing this to protect the field workers’ jobs. But economics nearly always wins.
As long as the pickers are cheap, they’ll keep their miserable jobs. But at some point they will want more—can’t blame them, it’s unpleasant work at best—and when they get more, they’ll be replaced.
Not much has changed since 1861, they still want their slaves.

Nice response. Personally I would add the mechanized cotton picker into the mix. International Harvester’s intoduction of this in 1941 (or was is 1943?) carpet-bombed a good deal of existing social structure at the time. IH claimed one picker supplanted 10 manual workers. A real world expert I heard speak about this two years ago opined it was closed to 30.
Machines don’t go on strike right at harvest time. Build the wall!
If this somehow passes the Senate, Trump needs to veto it. Purposely stifling the advance of productivity-enhancing technology is just plain stupid.

Don’t kid yourself, Bush League Republicans love amnesty of every kind, even knowing they are giving the Democrats a permanent majority.
Micro Rubio has only voted for one and was re-elected, Flimsey Grahamnesty has done it THREE times.
