French commuters faced a 360-mile traffic jam today as the fifth day of nationwide strikes caused delays into Paris.

Traffic was held up getting into the French capital on Paris' ring road, the Peripherique, which was up from 90 miles on an average day.

The Parisian metro had only two out of it 16 lines fully operating and the SNCF national railway company warned against severe disruptions in the suburbs of Paris.

It would replace the current 42 different pension plans that vary according to profession and region, which allows some workers are entitled to a full pension before minimum retirement age at 62.

Reminds me of the byzantine tax system in Ancien Regime France. Different areas of France would pay different taxes based on whether they earned feudal privileges. The most notorious was the gabelle salt tax.

I'm guessing this is a cumulative metro Paris number. On the other hand, they might just be stuck and not able to get out.

All 20% of the population that are employed prevented from getting to work so this just can’t end well.

It’s not a straight line traffic jam. If you go to Google Maps right now (4:00 pm Paris time), every highway in and around Paris is red, the entire city is jammed up for this evening’s commute.

Ah. Okay. And this is the wonderful mass transit system idea we’re supposed to embrace here in America.

I live in Europe and have been to Paris, this is much worse. The strikes have shut down much of the Metro and commuter trains.

I want to go back and finish the touring the Louvre and Musee d’Orsay, but not now, not for a million dollars.

European mass transit is inexpensive and convenient, but also can be very crowded and does place you at the mercy of any disruption.

I drove from SW France to the Paris airport (CDG) on September 29, which was a Saturday.

FLEW up the A10. 20 miles outside of Paris GPS said 35 minutes to the airport.

It took four hours, because the peripherique was at a standstill.

This is nothing new.

Good day to commute by bicycle. A bit cool with temps in the 40s (F) but zipping past all the stuck traffic and home with hot soup hours before they get unstuck, nice!
