Death of Venice
NRO ^ | 21 Nov 2019 | James Lileks

Venice suffered some historic floods in November, and we all know what the cause is: not its proximity to this strange, heaving body of liquid some call “the sea,” or the fact that Venice admits “the sea” into its city limits with a series of picturesque canals, or the fact that the entire city rests on logs and has sunk a bit over the years. No, it’s your gas stove. Also your shower. And your hamburger. The solution? Stop letting women control the temperature in the house.

It’s the only logical conclusion, but we need to set this up. First, consider the mayor of Venice: He blamed the flooding on climate change, just as Australian climate activists blamed recent brushfire maelstroms on a planet that’s falling apart like a cheap fridge a month after the warranty lapses. But Venice had a worse flood in 1966, when the waters topped 194 centimeters, as opposed to the recent flood’s crest of 154 centimeters.

You might think: America will never have that problem, because we don’t use the metric system.

True! But we will have that problem soon if we don’t change our ways. Start with the most obvious cause for the Venice floods: your hamburger. As totally moderate non-crazy right–down–the–middle–of–Main Street Pete Buttigieg said, if you’re eating a hamburger, you’re “part of the problem” when it comes to climate change.

Could the problem be that the city resides below sea level and not global warming? I know that sounds really crazy...

Nothing like a three-nozzle misting shower.

I went to Venice in 2000 and they told us the individual little islands that make up Venice, are slowly sinking, so of course the annual flooding will continue to get worse.

Knock down the levies in New Orleans and we’ll have the American Venice. The enviroloons can scream climate change and have their first “I told you so”.

So true.

Venice is built on several layers of buildings from other times when the water table was lower.

Good articles like this have been coming forth from NRO recently. Maybe they’re no longer into trashing folks like George Zimmerman, the Covington catholic kids, and Trump.

Yep its slowly sinking into the swamp it was built on.
Venice was a rich and prosperous city until the trade routes went to the Americas.
Now its just a nice tourist town that re-lives past glory.

so i built a third castle... that burnt down, fell over, then sank into the swamp... but the fourth castle stood up.

My father’s description of this procedure suggested that the temperature of the water was so low ...

That happened to my father at my house. He forgot the water heater was in the garage, while the shower was upstairs at the opposite end of the house.

"Venice has always flooded."

At least it's not the 1980's when "settled science" said the oceans will dry up in 10 years. :)

There was a fantastic side-by-side meme depicting flooding in a square today versus flooding in the same square from some Renaissance painting.

Could not debunk the Alarmists any more clearly than that.

The flooding of Venice, and anywhere else, is being caused by the massive amounts of Seawater being displaced due to the numbers of gigantic Cruise Ships in operation around the world.

I thought everyone knew that.

And it could be that the reason the city now resides below sea level is because it has been slowly sinking due to the constant annual increase of mass loaded on to a less than solid soil base.
