Kimmel did a poor job.

They did. PM at the time called it a national disgrace. Don’t recall when, but some time in the ‘70s, or maybe the ‘80s in response to Reagan signing a bill paying reparations to former internment camp inmates or their immediate family if deceased.

Kimmel did a poor job.

No he didn't, he and Short were the scape goats of Washington. In today's terms, they were thrown under the buss.

Had they been provided the information that Washington had at least a day earlier, the devastation the Japanese created at PH likely would not have happened.

One collegue and one neighbor were in the navy and stationed in Pearl Harbor on December 7.

One of my parents’ friends was part of the Marine detail in Hong Kong and from December 8 to VJ day was a POW in Japan.
The marines should hav had diplomatic immunity, but some low level bureacrat did not sign the proper forms.

Baloney. Everyone knew war was imminent and was arrayed. The USS Ward sank a midget sub an hour and 11 minutes before the air attack.
He was poorly arrayed, had no response to that and was caught flat footed.

He was a bad as MacArthur in the Philippines.

It wasn’t just a scapegoat, it was a peacetime admiral not up to the job.

The accounts were squared when we nuked them. Twice.

Should we continuously apologize for that as well?

I remember the day, listening on the radio in a friends home. I was only 9 but it was something that stayed with me . I hope the young today also remember important parts of our history. Its said that history begins the day you are born. Its my hope that is incorrect.

Kimmel's family has been trying to have his rank restored posthumously but all the presidents since the attack have turned a blind eye. And that includes Clinton and Obama which is strange why the documentary would put that quotation at the very end.

_________

Yes ... at the end of the show when talking about the four Presidents since 2000 who haven't moved to restore Kimmel's rank, I believe the narrator was indicating that the government didn't want to open up the whole thing again --- the speculation as to who was at fault, or speculation that FDR just let it happen to get into the war.

I guess we'll never know.

Knowing how "less than candid" our government has been when maneuvering us into wars, I generally assume the darker angle.

The Japanese have never apologized for the PH attack.

The US has never apologized for nuking Japan.

I'm good with it that way.

My 6 uncles were all in the armed forces. All survived. Uncle Bill was in the 1st wave at Omaha Beach. The Detroit Free Press did a nice write up on his experience “A Life on Borrowed Time” in the paper many years ago...complete with sketch artists. Uncle Frank was shot down in the Pacific and picked up by a carrier or sub (I forgot which). R.I.P. men. I’m still driving Uncle Frank’s last car.

My father was not in the armed forces. His brother was.

I’m one of the few Freepers (or people in the US for that matter) who remembers that day. I was 5 years old. Mom, Dad, and I were having Sunday dinner at our neighbor’s house. I finished first, and was allowed to go into the living room and dance to music on the radio. I heard the announcement of the bombing and went in and told the adults. They were terrified.

My dad, like every other man, volunteered for service but was declared 4F because of a heart problem. He became one of the many “dollar a year” men.

Ignoring the radar situation, Kimmel had sufficient float planes and submarines that had they been out on patrol, the Japanese fleet would have been detected early enough to go on alert.

MacArthur did fine in the Philippines. The gods of war just happened to side with the Japanese that morning.

The USS Ward sank a midget sub an hour and 11 minutes before the air attack.

At approx. 6:40 a.m., the sub was sunk. It was almost an hour later before Admiral Kimmel received a telephone call from the staff duty officer, reporting the Ward-submarine incident..........

immel had sufficient float planes and submarines that had they been out on patrol, the Japanese fleet would have been detected early enough to go on alert.

The Japanese fleet was reported to be in either their home port or some in the S. China Sea.........There was no reason to believe they were headed for the Hawaiian Islands..........

Any observation by your alleged float planes would have been too late, they would have been shot down by the Japanese and the subsequent attack would have succeeded anyway.....

Just my opinion and in no way represents the opinions of the historians who have determined that it was the home town Washington elites who threw Admiral Kimmel under the bus........

No reason? Why then did Gen Short on Nov 28 place US Army forces in Hawaii on alert?

Any observation by your alleged float planes would have been too late, they would have been shot down by the Japanese and the subsequent attack would have succeeded anyway.....

If you understood the capabilities and uses of float planes, radio, or even submarines, you wouldn't have written that.

And if you would have taken the time to read the synopsis of Pearl Harbor that I posted, you would have kept your comment to yourself.

Now do yourself a favor, read it..........Sheesh!

Kudos to you tho fso301, it's good to know we have scholars such as you on this site who have more knowledge about military history than the professionals who have actually studied and written about it.............LOL!

So when is YOUR book on Pearl Harbor coming out? Inquiring minds want to know.....

My Uncle was there writing out Xmas cards to send home to New Jersey when he heard all the commotion. He told me a few stories about that day.

You should be very proud of those uncles. The character actor Charles Durning was in one of the first waves of men to go ashore on D-Day. People called him a hero and he always said the heros were men who were killed that day.

My son and I watched Tora Tora Tora this morning, in 1971 my dad and I watched it. A great movie indeed.
