WASHINGTON—Parents of infants under 1 year of age or adopted children of any age could receive in advance up to $5,000 of their child tax credit to help cover expenses under a bipartisan bill introduced Dec. 4.

The “Advancing Support for Working Families Act” was unveiled during a joint Capitol Hill news conference by Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), as well as Reps. Colin Allred (D-Texas) and Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.).

....

“This does not raise taxes, and it does not have mandates. We give options to the parents,” Cassidy said during the news conference.

“Under the tax cut act last year, we increased the child tax credit from $1,000 to $2,000.”

“And what we have done is, we allow a family having a newborn or adopting to pull forward some of that benefit, so that the family, instead of getting $2,000 that first year, can get $5,000.”

“They can take that $5,000 and use it for income replacement if they decide to stay home, or if they need to return to work, they can use it for child care.”

Sinema said, “If a family already gets paid leave through their employer, they could choose to use this $5,000 for supplies, for child care, for purchasing cribs, for taking additional time off beyond what their employer provides.”

Sinema said the bill was the product of more than six months of effort in collaboration among the co-sponsors and representatives of President Donald Trump, nonprofits, and family advocacy groups.

“We’ve been in contact with the White House and a long list of bipartisan policy groups,” she said.

All the illegal aliens will like that

Americans who have multiple children as I do like it, though I won't ever use it. I don't need an advance on my child tax credit because I have a nice savings account but I can see where some might.

Nothing wrong with the CTC.

Nothing wrong with the CTC for US citizens. The problem is that it still goes to illegal aliens. https://www.numbersusa.com/blog/tax-bill-fails-eliminate-tax-credits-illegal-aliens

I agree. At least they've cracked down significantly on the fraud (people claiming far more children than they had received tax credits no questions asked) but the fact we still give this money to illegal crimmigrants needs to stop altogether.

Nothing like getting your “benefits” earlier rather than late.

Congress getting into the payday loan business is not a good idea.

Even if pregnancies aren’t planned, planning for the birth and aftercare is something every parent needs to do before the birth. Then, if no employer plan, state disability kicks in about 6 weeks or so before birth and for some time afterwards. Along with medical, medical for the child, foodstamps for the child, child-care for the child, etc.

Instead of yet another device aimed at promoting single parenthood, which is destroying common law decency along with the family structure essential to advanced civilization, they should find a process to reward the fathers who stick around to support their babymommas.

Youngest has a 2 yr old, he works all the hours he can get, his wife works PT and goes to nursing school. Both drive older vans. Son may need hand surgery if the swelling doesn’t go down in his finger where he smashed it, didn’t think to turn the accident in to WC.
