Bodycam footage shows South Carolina deputy under attack shooting suspect’s mom

Bodycam footage released Wednesday shows the moment a South Carolina deputy accidentally shot a shoplifting suspect’s mother in her home while trying to make an arrest.

The Greenville County sheriff’s deputy, who hasn’t been publicly named, confronted 40-year-old Sean Theodore Kaiser Oct. 20 in front of his mom’s home, but he retreated inside, according to the footage released by the sheriff’s office.

In all my years of policing (16+) I am hard-pressed to remember seeing something this bad. This video is unreal from beginning to end. How can you Mirandize someone who isn't in custody?! This isn't the movies. But that's only the beginning of this nightmare. It was tough making it through the entire video.

Look at this officer’s arms. I don’t care if you’re a man or a woman. If those are your arms the only thing you should ever try to put into custody is your next jelly donut.

I would have called for backup. That's a precarious situation for a lone man to be in, let alone a woman.

The thing of it is, and this is just my opinion, when someone refuses to cooperate over a small thing, it's a sure sign there's something going on that's going to make the confrontation more difficult than otherwise.

She called multiple times. Not sure what the holdup was, but it took the second cop a loooooong time to get there. If you’re alone and the guy is not compliant and you have no way to handle it, let the guy go inside, take mom outside with you, isolate and contain the suspect, and wait for backup.

Either that, or he was hammered drunk. But I agree with you that I think he’s not all there mentally. Even more reason to contain until backup arrives.

This is a testimonial to WHY women should not be STREET cops.

I predict that one day there will be few, if any, women attempting to be a street cop. She is truly lucky she wasn’t killed and if the woman she shot does not die she is TWICE lucky!

I imagine too that scenes like this play out daily somewhere and this one we just happen to get to see before someone covered it up.

That female officer apparently has had no training on subduing a suspect! Outrageous that she would grab for her gun instead of a taser or some other nonlethal means to get him under control. The guy doesn’t appear to be armed That’s just crazy!!

To be fair, i've seen some pretty stupid male officers too, big bellies and all. Aren't there weight requirements that officers must meet, regardless of sex? There's some real porkers out there. If they had to run to pursue a suspect, they'd have a coronary before they made it 100 feet.
