PORT NECHES, Texas (AP) — More than 50,000 people in southeast Texas remained under a mandatory evacuation order Thursday as a fire continued to burn at a chemical plant, one day after two massive explosions there.
Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens said the evacuation order and a 10 p.m. curfew order remain in effect. Officials don’t know when people will be able to return to their homes.
“It’s Thanksgiving, a lot of people are displaced, they can’t go home,” Stephens told TV station KFDM Thursday, explaining the danger of further explosions and fire rather than air quality problems is the reason the evacuation order remains in place.
The Wednesday blasts, 13 hours apart, blew out windows and doors of nearby homes and prompted a mandatory evacuation of a 4-mile (7-kilometer) radius from the plant in Port Neches in Southeast Texas, about 80 miles (129 kilometers) east of Houston.

maybe Ive missed something.....but what kind of “chemical” plant was it????
I find it strange nobody is saying...
Because the plant makes more than one chemical.
They all are derived from petroleum.
It is effectively a huge refiner, but it doesn’t make gasoline, just other highly combustible compounds.
NPR is blaming Trump as a result of the recent relaxation of regulations at chemical plants.

One of the finest Christian men I have ever known worked as a chemist for one of those SE Texas chemical companies. He had a bunch of patents but more importantly, a really hot daughter.

The whole Corpus Christie Fire Department got killed by an explosion of a ship loaded with ammonium nitrate. The anchor for the ship weighing 700 pounds landed over a mile away. Just harmless fertilizer. Hope these guys are being real careful.
They have a small ethylene plant there, and a C4 processing plant that produces Butadiene. I also haven’t seen or heard which part is involved.
I’ve been in that plant. I used to work with a guy was site manager there a few years ago. My company still sells to them.
I’m sure I’ll hear more. But for now... I’d assume it’s C4’s burning.
That was the Texas City explosion in 1947 when the SS Grandcamp detonated followed about 12 hrs later by the SS Highflyer.
Probably the best summery was the book “City on Fire.”
One reason for the high death toll was that it (Grandcamp) had burned for some time before detonating and a lot of the town folk walked down to the docks to watch the show.

I always worked at THAT site (Old Monsanto, then Sterling, now Eastman) for 5 years... from 1988 to 1993.

No... Those are complex explosives..
This C4 just means, 4 carbon molecules... like Butane, Butene, and Butadiene.
Their main product is Butadiene, which is sold to Goodyear, nearby, to make tires. (Styrene-Butadiene rubber)
