When the House First Tried to Impeach a President, It Failed
The Daily Signal ^ | November 26, 2019 | Fred Lucas

The president’s critics thought his presidency was illegitimate to begin with. His Cabinet members changed frequently. Mainly based on policy disagreements, members of Congress demanded his ouster.

Some lawmakers were willing to toss out constitutional norms based on what they said was the president’s “ignorance of the interest and true policy of this Government, and want of qualification for the discharge of the important duties” of his office.

But we’re talking 1843, not 2019.

In the midst of House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry targeting President Donald Trump, many pundits make comparisons to the impeachments of Presidents Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998, as well as the near-impeachment preempted by President Richard Nixon’s resignation in 1974.

But lawmakers’ first serious effort to impeach a president was against President John Tyler in 1843. And it didn’t succeed, not even in the House.

The attempt to impeach Tyler had some similarities to the Johnson impeachment: A vice president—with a history in the opposition party—takes the top job upon a president’s death but fails to get along with the elected president’s party in Congress.

The Whig ticket of William Henry Harrison and John Tyler—“Tippecanoe and Tyler too”—won by a decisive landslide in the 1840 election. Harrison scored 234 electoral votes and 53% of the popular vote to oust President Martin Van Buren, the unpopular Democrat, who collected just 60 electoral votes.

Harrison, a former Ohio senator, was known as “Tippecanoe” for his military heroism against Native American forces in the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe in Indiana.

For vice president, the Whigs tapped Tyler, a former Virginia governor and U.S. senator. He was a Whig convert after leaving the Democratic Party in protest of President Andrew Jackson’s policies.

Trump should start trolling the hell out of the DNC and the media, encouraging impeachment so they can have a trial to investigate Democrat RICO corruption. “The Democrats will get to say that they impeached me in the House...on their way to jail for corruption and treason when they are convicted in the Senate!”

At least as of a couple years ago two of President Tyler’s grandsons were still alive! Tyler had an interesting life. IIRC he was elected to the Confederate congress, but died before he could take his seat there.

I’m skeptical that any of Tyler’s grandsons are alive — they’d be around 150 years old by now, wouldn’t they?

Anyway, President Tyler is one of my direct ancestors, though I don’t recall offhand precisely how many levels of “grand-“. William Tyler Page, author of the American’s Creed, was descended from President Tyler, and I am Page’s great-grandson.

I am 67, and I am extremely proud and deeply honored to have such gentlemen in my family tree. My strong patriotism, and fierce love of America, are rooted in my genes.

Believe it. At age 62 he fathered a son named Lyon, one of the President’s 15 children. Two sons, Jr. and Harrison were born in 1924 and 1928 respectively. They were both alive as of 2017.
You need to introduce yourself to the rest of your family.

You come from hardy stock! President Tyler had more children than any other president and continued having them late into his life. One of his last born children did the same and had sons born in 1920s. I’d seen two were alive in 2018.. They’d be in early 90s now. Tyler’s last daughter lived into 1947.

POTUS, Trump can relax...just a bit. A radical, fat pig, nutcase, Jewish congressman from the heart of left wing, Godless, failed NYC, New York is not the person to “Chair” the Trump inmpeachment gig. Yep...Nadler & Schiff in the middle of the Christmas holiday...plying their hate & lies against POTUS, Donald J. Trump. Smart move Nancy Pelosi....”NOT”!!! No one will be watching or tuned in to these two buffoons on TV. I might remind you, Ms. Pelosi, the USA is about an 80% Christian Country!!!

Ms. Nancy Pelosi is far from being a strategic thinker. The very people that crucified Jesus Christ with the aid of the Roman Army....condemning another Christian (POTUS, Donald J. Trump) in the middle of the Christian High Holy Days...this woman,....sadly, is not too bright!!! The TV viewer ratings will not even be measurable...period!!!

In fact, the TV networks would be wise not to carry any of this hate and envy garbage!!!

I could be wrong, but I remember reading long ago that Mary Tyler Moore is a descendant of Pres. Tyler?

Back in 1973 and ‘74, I dated a young lady who was descended from John Tyler via her mother and from Merriweather Lewis via her father.

Harrison’s Cabinet insisted that Tyler was only an acting president, but Tyler established a precedent that would hold by asserting that a vice president automatically moves into the presidency upon a vacancy in the office.

The Cabinet and Henry Clay argued that Tyler was Acting President until the Electoral College chosen in the 1840 election could be re-seated at its respective state capitals and choose a new president and vice president. Had that argument prevailed, Clay was sure that he would be chosen as president.

Indeed! Well, today I'll be talking with the family genealogist (my mom, who is 95) and I'll see what she can dig up about that branch. Presumably we came down from a different branch, but given that there were 15 of them, it's not too surprising that I didn't know about one of the others. :-)

Thank you all for the updates, and Happy Thanksgiving!

The constitution allows four justifications for impeachment: Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Question: If the Democrats impeached Trump for reasons other than those 4, could the Supreme Court overturn the impeachment?

Well, again thank you all for encouraging a little research on my family tree.

My 95-yr-old mom, it turns out, knew all about the two living grandsons from her genealogical work over the years, and in fact had gone to hear one of them (Harrison Tyler) speak at a historical presentation in 1990. She and I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!
