Heiko Maas against unilateral removal of nuclear weapons from Germany

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas visited Hiroshima on Friday to commemorate victims of the 1945 nuclear attack and promote a nuclear-weapon-free world.

“One day living in a nuclear-weapon-free world has to remain our goal,” he said. “Even though that will not be easy and may take a long time.”

However, the foreign minister said he was against a unilateral German withdrawal of nuclear weapons.

“It’s no use if nuclear weapons are just moved from one country to another. If they are to disappear then they should disappear everywhere,” he said. “As far as nuclear disarmament is concerned, we need agreements on a broad basis, not only in individual countries.”

Germany currently stores around 20 US nuclear warheads. The armed forces have Tornado jets on standby to deploy them if necessary. …

“... to commemorate victims of the 1945 nuclear attack....”

... that ended the War of Aggression that Japan had started on December 7, 1941, by attacking the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Let’s be clear, Heiko... because YOUR country partnered up with them.

It’s no use if nuclear weapons are just moved from one country to another...

Au contraire - if the destination country is the United States and they're out of NATO countries altogether that does present a considerable change in the balance of power in Europe. If I were advising Trump over the renegotiation of NATO commitments this would be at the top of the list. From Wikipedia:

As of November 2009, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey are hosting U.S. nuclear weapons as part of NATO's nuclear sharing policy.

That's decade-old information, to be sure, and frankly I'd be surprised if the Turkey deployment hasn't been altered a bit in the meantime, but the gist of the thing is still a topic for discussion. Does the presence of these weapons constitute more of a security risk for the United States than it does a security benefit for Europe? Is it time to pull them out and let the EU decide whether it wants to be a nuclear power? And parenthetically, how did these deadly threats to world peace (to hear the Left blather) when the Soviet Union existed magically change their status to guarantors of anything since then?

I'd love to hear a discussion of whether the juice is worth the squeeze in this day and age. If the answer is that it helps guard Europe against the Iranians they're so determined to help with their own nuclear weapons program, perhaps a reconsideration is long overdue.

I’m with unilateral removal of nukes from areas that are coming under Muslim domination because of the suicidal and cowardly political correctness of the elites.

A ‘nuclear free world’ implies that whoever’s in ‘control’ has it completely. Otherwise how can anyone be sure of no surprises. This future world where there’s complete control doesn’t sound too good to me. I’d rather have nuclear weapons.
Kind of like, I’d rather live in a world that has fear of the Lord than a world with no apparent consequence. Keeps you honest. Better place to live.
It’s easy to see why liberals don’t like nukes or God and keep trying to create a world without them.

Europe needs to give up all its nukes.

Now, before the Muslims get their hands on them.

Wait, am I reading and understanding this correctly?

I am not surprised we have 20+ nuclear weapons in Germany. However we don’t operate the Tornado. The Germans do.

Please tell me there is no way that they have deployment capability with our nuclear weapons.

This would either be bad reporting or colossal stupidity on our part.

I’m going 99/100 with bad reporting.

"Germany currently stores around 20 US nuclear warheads. "

One of the many reasons that the moslem invasion of Germany is underway... Nuclear jihad is just a few-dozen more boatloads away...
