Globe had its 2nd-hottest October and year to date on record
NOAA ^ | 11 18 2019 | NOAA

Planet Earth continued to sweat in unrelenting heat last month making October 2019 the second-hottest October recorded, just behind 2015.

It was also the second-hottest year to date (January through October) on record for the globe. Continuing its melting trend, Arctic sea ice coverage shrank to its smallest size yet for October.

Below are more highlights from NOAA’s latest monthly global climate report:

Climate by the numbers: October 2019

The average global land and ocean surface temperature for October 2019 was 1.76 degrees F (0.98 of a degree C) above the 20th-century average and the second highest October temperature on record. This value was only 0.11 of a degree F (0.06 of a degree C) short of the record-warm October set in 2015.

The 10 warmest Octobers have occurred since 2003, with the five warmest Octobers occurring since 2015. October 2019 was also the 43rd consecutive October and the 418th consecutive month with temperatures — at least nominally — above the 20th-century average. Year to date | January through October

The year to date global land and ocean surface temperature of 1.69 degrees F (0.94 of a degree C) above the 20th-century average made it the second-warmest January-through-October period in the 140-year record. This was 0.16 of a degree F (0.09 of a degree C) cooler than the record-warm year to date set in 2016.

More notable climate events from this report

Arctic sea ice coverage was the smallest ever recorded for October at 32.2 percent below the 1981–2010 average. The 10 smallest Arctic sea ice extents for October have occurred since 2007.

Warmth around the world: Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Caribbean and the Hawaiian Islands region experienced temperatures that ranked among the three highest on record for October.

The world’s average sea surface temperature ranked second-warmest ever recorded for the year to date — less than a 10th of a degree cooler than the record-warm sea surface temperature observed in 2016.

Planet Earth continued to sweat in unrelenting heat last month making October 2019 the second-hottest October recorded, just behind 2015.

Why is Oct 2019 the second hottest October since 2015?

If the earth is warming, shouldn't it be the hottest Oct. since 2018?

Did the temperatures not rise or did they drop in 2016, 2017, and 2018?

We are in a cooling cycle according to the Maunder Solar Minimum which has a 98% correlation between sun spot activity and climate. Carbon Dioxide based models are only 4% accurate in predicting climate.

I am going with Maunder...we are in a cooling cycle and it sure is cold here in Eastern North America./ Extraordinarily cold: January Temperatures in November.

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2019/11/17/yeah-its-officially-the-tenth-anniversary-of-climategate/

From Charles:

It was ten years ago today that I personally first viewed the instructions to download the Climategate files from the anonymous Russian server. That set in motion a series of events still affecting the outcome of worldwide energy and environmental policy today. The whitewashers at the BBC, The Guardian, and elsewhere have started putting up their officially sanctioned narrative version, amounting to little more than nothing to see hear move along.

I wrote up my contemporaneous version of events here.

Anyone who wants to rebut claims of exoneration can use this Ross McKitrick paper for reference.

A couple of days ago we reposted Judith Curry’s excellent 10 year anniversary write up.

There’s little I can say that Dr. Curry does not touch upon, except for the fact that it is gratifying to see ideas we help disseminate echoing back to us via both traditional and social media.

Meanwhile it’s expected to hit 90 today in San Diego. Have never seen that before in November. The weather is definitely weird this year.

Wow! and November was downright simmering over here. It was sooooo hot . . . HOW HOT WAS IT? . . . it was soooo hot that it had to have two yuge snowstorms to keep it from melting!

On record? How long have we been keeping records? We know the Earth has been much hotter (and colder) than today.

Instead of it being a minus 40 somewhere it warmed up to a minus 30; and it’s still a minus 60 at altitude.

Bull Crap. Avg. Temp. here in Mo. was exact same as last year-45 degrees F. And that is colder than what it used to be when my kids were little and trick or treating 45 years ago.

We are in a grand solar minimum. If man made global warming is real, I’d like to know what ended the ICE AGE? There weren’t any automobiles back then. Globull Warming is illogical.

Environmentalists can’t have it both ways.. global warming and climate change. Once the hockey stick theory was disproved that temps were not consistently climbing they moved to the nonsense phrase climate change to denote extreme weather whatever that is. If there is a bump up in temps they move back to global warming until it cools and then they move back to climate change

I remember having 10 days in a row above 100 degrees in Denver in the 90s. For the last 5 years we have had 1 or 2 days above 100 and one year we had none.

Wow, this is of Mythical proportions!

It's been a mild summer here in Southern California.

First of all, there was hardly a warm day until around the first of July this year.

If we've ventured into the 100s, it wasn't deeply or often.

Nights have been in the 40s and 50s for the last month.

Where do they come up with this nonsense?
