RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Democrats continued their winning streak under President Trump on Tuesday and took full control of the statehouse for the first time in more than two decades.
Democrats won majorities in both the state House and Senate in the marquee warmup for next year’s presidential election, the third election in a row in which they have made significant gains since Trump was elected.
Of the four states with legislative elections this year, Virginia is the only one where control of the statehouse was up for grabs. Republicans had slim majorities in both the state House and Senate.
National groups, particularly those aligned with Democrats, pumped huge amounts of money into the contests as a way to test-drive expensive messaging and get-out-the-vote campaigns ahead of the 2020 cycle. Gun control and clean energy groups affiliated with former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg spent several million dollars helping Democrats.
Virginia also drew several high-profile visits from 2020 presidential hopefuls, including former Vice President Joe Biden, as well as current Vice President Mike Pence.
Trump tried to rally Republicans via Twitter but stayed out of Virginia, a state he lost in 2016.
His election three years ago has been disastrous for Virginia Republicans, particularly in growing suburban areas. Democrats have won every statewide contest, picked up three additional congressional seats and now are set to control both the state house and the Executive Mansion for the first time since 1994.
Republicans were hoping an off-year election with no statewide candidates on the ballot would help defuse the anti-Trump energy that powered previous cycles. GOP lawmakers also were hopeful that the specter of a possible Trump impeachment would anger and motivate the Republican base.

And now, with rats in full control of all future redistricting, the GOP will be left with a single Congressional district in the SW corner of the state. The black-robed tyrants won’t have even the slightest objection to this.
Virginia is a lost cause now. The only thing left to fight for are the House seats still held by Republicans. Statewide seats are a lost cause now, as is the state legislature.
Is it Trump’s fault? No, it’s not, at least not entirely. Statewide races had been trending Democrat before Trump won the presidency. Yeah maybe Cuccinelli could have won the governorship in 2013 had he got some party support as he ended up losing a very close race he was expected to lose handily. The same goes for the Gillespie senate race against Warner in 2014, but in the end, a loss is a loss.
The influx of liberals from other states, the spillover of Democrat government workers from D.C., and the influx of pro-Democrat immigrants have simply altered the demography of the state in the Democrats favor. President Trump can’t be blamed for any of that.
But the movement of college educated, suburban whites away from the GOP can be traced to Trump. Even with that it could just be the acceleration of a trend as I’ve been hearing about losing the burbs since the Clinton era. Still though it’s hard to deny that lots of state and Congressional districts that were comfortably held by Republicans during the Obama years are now blue.
I don’t think Trump is capable of moderating his demeanor and behavior to appeal to these voters, and even if he did, the media will trash Trump no matter what, and I think this brand of white voters still largely accepts the narrative pushed by the media.
We can only hope that the Democrats will go so far left that not even the media can cover for them, and some of these mid-upscale whites will return to the GOP.
Trump needs to stop listening to these buffoons. Shocking, the states you never visit you never win. Trump should go there and go often. Make the case. If you lose it shouldn’t be out of fear. Same goes for NY, IL and CA. If the local GOPeb doesn’t want you there all the better. Rail against them too. That’s when he’s at his best anyways

Virginia is the new New Jersey and it will follow that the state will become what Jersey has become.

This is a function of two things. One: A judge illegally redrawing the district lines to be more favorable to democrats.
Two: Obama removed the citizen question. They just counted people in the last census. Consequently, the dems got several more districts in blue Northern Virginia based on people (legal and illegal non-citizens) and not how many citizens.
That is really what the mass migration was about. More census numbers mean more electoral votes. If Trump rightly only counts citizens for the apportionment of electoral votes between states, the dems will lose big time. As many as 20 electoral votes in blue states could go up in smoke. Expect a huge fight.
Last time the dims were in charge I had to take out a loan to keep up with that wilder governor's one gun a month program. I tried to keep up but had to give it up after a year or so.

Structurally, the GOP is in a neat-impossible position. Huge influx of government workers for decades—and most of them live in NoVa. Couple that with unfettered immigration and a state Republican Party that has been at war with itself for 20+ years, and you have a blueprint for disaster.
Normally, the Republicans would have a shot after the Democrats run the state into the ground, but with court-ordered re-districting, the Dims actually titled the landscape more in their favor (and remember, that was after the GOP controlled legislature had re-drawn the map). So, the Democrats just found a friendly federal judge who tossed out the GOP plan and the state wound up with new boundaries that (surprise, surprise) favored the Dims. And the New Democrat majority will stick with them through thick, thin, and scandal. Governor KKK, Lt Gov Sexual Predator and Attorney General Blackface were not a drag on the Dims—in fact, they weren’t even a campaign issue
Such is the pathetic state of the Virginia GOP
Get ready, Virginians. Your state is about to be as wacky as Colorado.
Obama didn't remove the citizenship question on the census, it hasn't been there since 1950.
Even when the census asked about citizenship, aliens were still counted for apportionment.
Either way they need to answer for this.
It’s either that they are cheap labor whores owned by the donor class, or they have accepted the Left’s narrative about the country having a moral imperative to allow mass immigration forever. Or both.
Just look at how many GOP Senators recently came out against President Trump’s wise reduction in refugee admissions. All of them were basically saying we should import as many refugees as possible, which is to say, as many future Democrats as possible.
George Allen was considered a rising star and likely future Presidential candidate. Then macacca happened.
Then he lost again, next time to the loathsome Tim Kaine, and his political career was dead.
Virginia is toast. They are going to go full-blown Democrat for good. Remember, Democrats are all communists. Not partly communists. Fully communist. The tax rate is going to go through the roof.

The loss of Virginia, Nevada, and New Hampshire over the last 15 or so years has really made our presidential races difficult along with Colorado drifting away.
NH might come back, next year, but Virginia is gone.
Unbelievable! It's appalling that all of them are still in office. Can you imagine if they were Republicans??
20 years ago, my husband and I briefly thought it might be nice to retire in Virginia. Now... why the hell move from one Blue State (CT) to another?? Virginia is now South Maryland.
It's probably gonna be SC, GA or FL for us now.
