The Trump administrations announcement that it would withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement is a largely symbolic move, but it is nevertheless another reminder of President Trumps greatest folly: his disgraceful denial of the threat posed by catastrophic climate change. No matter who wins the Democratic presidential nomination, Trumps open hostility toward any action on climate will elevate it to a defining issue in the 2020 campaign. Voters will choose between a president and Republican Party proud of systematic resistance to any action on climate, and a challenger and Democratic Party dedicated to historic efforts to limit the already costly threat to life as we know it.
Against this real and escalating threat, Trump aided and abetted by Republicans in Congress has pushed to roll back regulation after regulation to curb fossil-fuel emissions. The president has deep-sixed President Barack Obamas climate plan, rolled back automobile mileage standards and opened federal lands to fossil-fuel companies.
At a time when the international scientific community has concluded that we have 11 years to avert the worst of climate change, Trump and his Republican allies are working to intensify the threat, not deter it. A more egregious dereliction of duty is impossible to imagine. Trumps denial mirrors the story of Nero fiddling while Rome burns. Like Nero, Trump is helping set the flames. Democrats are raising the alarm. The contrast cannot be clearer.

Piss off Washington Post. The climate is going to do what God and Mother Nature want it to do- regardless of what humans do or say.
WP needs to figure out why no one believes them.
Just call her Butthurt Heuvel.
Either a cynical b*tch or an idiot.
Everybody knows that climate changes.
Where I’m sitting right now was once buried beneath more than a mile of ice, and that was just a geological heartbeat ago.
What we reject is that mankind has a first-order effect on climate.
I submit it’s sixth order, at most.
Prove me wrong.
But her husband, Stephen Cohen, is a relatively sane Russia expert.
I’m sure President is aware that Chicago os not under a mile of ice - because of climate change.
Who cares? According to libs, the world will end in the next 11 years anyway.
Man-made climate change is a Neo-pagan religious cult. There’s nothing “scientific” about it.
Trump is President of the USA. His sworn duty is to protect the US from all enemies foreign, and domestic. He is doing just that here.
That sounds Wonderful! In fact, derilectably deplorable!
I don’t know if that is a word, but I like it.
Oh contrere, Katvanden. He is standing firm against the thieves, robbers and flim-flam artists in the climate hoax scam. Trump is my hero!!!!!
Live from Nitwit Central!
Can you spot the weasel words and sneaky math?
I knew you could.
Do you think this woman would understand a dry adiabatic lapse rate?
Islands in one south seas island group have been found to be growing. Land area was up several percent over a period of time, 30-40 years (approx).
OK, Bag . . . name ONE THING the climate fear mongers have ever predicted that has actually come true. . . .
The vanden Heuvel ‘s heard from again. A family that is a multi-generational pain in the a*s. This is the sort of hysterical screeching this wealthy clan of busybody pests were spewing back in the 60’s about the Viet Nam conflict..
I like how she sneaked a look to see if anyone was agreeing or disagreeing.
