As of November 1st, the current stretch of days without any observable sunspots in solar cycle 24 has reached a total of 228 spotless days in 2019 so far That’s 75% of the year so far. During the 2008 solar minimum, there were 268 days without sunspots, or 73% of the year. The sun as seen by the Solar Dynamics Observatory on Oct 31 2019

How do we know this sunspot belongs to the next solar cycle? Its magnetic polarity tells us so. Southern sunspots from old Solar Cycle 24 have a -/+ polarity. This sunspot is the opposite: +/-. According to Hale’s Law, sunspots switch polarities from one solar cycle to the next. Today’s emerging sunspot is therefore a member of Solar Cycle 25.
This development does not mean Solar Minimum is finished. On the contrary, low solar activity will probably continue for at least another year as Solar Cycle 24 decays and Solar Cycle 25 slowly sputters to life. If forecasters are correct, Solar Cycle 25 sunspots will eventually dominate the solar disk, bringing a new Solar Maximum as early as 2023.

“We expect Solar Cycle 25 will be very similar to Cycle 24: another fairly weak maximum, preceded by a long, deep minimum,” says panel co-chair Lisa Upton, a solar physicist with Space Systems Research Corp.
People wonder why it is as cold as hell everywhere right now. This is why and it is going to bad winter.
The global warming kooks have bastardized so much that simple stuff like the climate is driven by that big nuke furnace in the sky is not even considered.

There is so much we don’t know it insane the GW kooks put together a model and worship it. Things like meteor “smoke” and high energy solar and cosmic radiation create nucleation points for cloud formation. High CO2 cause algae blooms in the oceans which captures carbon self regulating the system. There is orders of magnitude more not known vs what is known or even suspected.
When I have a GW kook try to speak to me I have to take a deep breath and resist the urge to make them poop out their teeth. Arrogant idiots.

Global warming? Not. It’s flipping 30 degrees and falling outside here in Northern VA on Nov 1. I’m not going to drive my car anymore because apparently it is causing the world to cool even though they tell me it’s causing it to warm.

While doing so the Canadian Geo-Scientist found a correlation when certain species of fish had high population and then drastic drop offs. He discovered these fluctuations corresponded with sun spot activity and solar radiation vs cosmic activity. When earth cooling occurred.
Studying deep fjords along the Western Canadian coast where deep pools of low oxidation water exist. The Patterson study reached deep into the earths recent past of 4000 years of undisturbed sediments. Patterson found that when aquatic activity was highest and lowest in those collected sediments having high aquatic content had matched known solar protection when the magnetic wind was highest, and dropped off when earth magnetic fields activities were lowest.Thus causing cosmic radiation to intensify.
Then because the earth became unprotected by its magnetic fields from galactic cosmic activity. Patterson cites several accepted theories which concludes this then created cloud activity during such periods which increased drastically. Thus cooling earth and bringing in its ice ages.

Good info. It mentions several things I mentioned above. Cosmic high energy radiation, meteor “smoke” and sun spots (Solar activity). The magnetic field has everything to do with how much high energy radiation ionizes outer atmospheric matter to create cloud formation nucleation sites. Sun spots tell you how much energy the sun is putting out. An energetic sun has surface “storms” (sun spots). It takes something like a million years for a photon of any energy level to work its way out of the sun and speed off at the speed of light. The sun is like a percolator. Bubble, rest, bubble, rest. While it is bubbling more photons of all energies are put off. There is something like a 11 year gap between bubble and rest stages. There is a much much longer cycle of these cycles. Like with a percolator there is variability.
The damned GW kooks don’t know crap and are not using the scientific method.
I’ve have seen estimates solar energy hitting the earth is due to be down about 7%. Lack of sunspots indicates lower solar activity.

I think the solar activity compares better to the Dalton minimum than the Maunder (so far, this may change). The Dalton as you may know was a period of weak solar activity lasting from about 1795 to 1835; there were peaks in 1801-04 and 1815-16 that resemble 1999-2002 and 2012-13. The next weak cycle peaked in 1829-30 and then a more robust solar activity began with a strong peak in the late 1830s.
There were consecutive years in the Dalton period between those weak peaks with little to no solar activity.
Winter temperatures in Europe were similar in the Dalton and Maunder; summer temperatures were less affected. There isn’t enough reliable weather data from North America especially for the Maunder to make similar comparisons.
It may be a moot point if the weak Dalton and the total shutdown of the Maunder had the same impacts on climate anyway, except that the Dalton lasted 40 years and the Maunder lasted more like 60 with almost no activity for the last third of the 17th century and the first fifteen years of the 18th.
If there is some weak human modification of climate, these trends might partially cancel each other out resulting in a steady state climate through the solar downturn.
My own study of the situation points to a stronger warming from 1987 to 2006 than more recently, more variable trends since 2006, and peaks of warmth in North America and Europe often being simultaneous and very highly correlated with the El Nino cycle.
I agree that this coming winter could produce some severe cold especially in central and western regions, the east coast may be in more of a confluent zone between the cold Midwest and the milder than normal Atlantic provinces of Canada with the storm track running something like Texas to Kentucky to northern New England. If you’re on the northwest side of that, look out for a lot of winter storms. If you’re southeast of it, you’ll have some milder spells with those storms passing north of you. But I think that the east will start out cold too, November could be below average, not sure it will last into the heart of the winter season before flipping to mild.
There will be more unusual cold waves and snowstorms in the higher parts of the southwestern states as we just saw this past week. Kodachrome Basin State Park in Utah had an overnight low of -10 F recently, something that in a normal winter might happen once or twice in midwinter with snow cover. Where I live in southern BC, we had the coldest October low in the past century, and there is snow at about the 5 to 6 thousand feet elevation in the local hills that fell in September and hasn’t melted totally since then. Quite unusual for snow to appear that low before end of October, on summits yes but these are forested areas just above the populated zone in this region. It stays cold in the daytimes and the sun’s heat seems quite feeble compared to a more normal weather pattern in the autumn.

Winnipeg Manitoba had a heavy snowfall two weeks ago that caused widespread power outages as fully leafed trees were brought down by heavy wet snow. This too was almost unprecedented in modern times. Out of season snowfall records usually correlate to cold years in general, and are not correlated with any manifestations of warming as some climate scientists are trying to imply.
Yet, in 2005-2006, before cycle 24 began, NASA predicted cycle 24 was going to be larger than 23. Turns out 24 was about 1/2 of that.

I knew an old geologist (RIP) that studied glaciers and was all into cycles of various sorts. He wrote a paper once that correlated gold prices to solar sun spots. Fewer sun spots correlated to a higher price of gold. I thought he was crazy - but then realized that the gold prices may have been responding to the poor crops.
His research indicated that another cold period would be coming at some point. He did backyard experiments in breeding various crops better suited for cold weather, and ended up working with some University in Sweden with his work - some of his seeds ended up in some “doomsday” vault in some Norwegian mountain.
He was one of those guys that was so smart that he came across as crazy.
