Trump’s First Impeachment Win
The Atlantic ^ | October 31, 2019 | Russell Berman

The House’s resolution should have been the easiest for Republicans to go along with. None of them did.

So this is how the impeachment of President Donald Trump is going to go.

The House this morning cast its first vote in a process that could lead to just the third Senate impeachment trial of a president in U.S. history. When Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced plans for the vote earlier this week, there was at least some promise of drama: Which House Democrats would defect? How many Republicans might defy Trump to back a formal impeachment inquiry that a few of them had signaled their support for?

After all, this was a vote that Republicans and the White House had been demanding for weeks—an official resolution that took the ambiguity and the secrecy out of the closed-door process Democrats had been conducting, a means of forcing every lawmaker to go on record in support of or in opposition to the impeachment inquiry. Pelosi, who had resisted holding such a vote for more than a month, had given in.

Yet when lawmakers gathered in the House chamber this morning, the actual tally turned out to be like so many others in Congress: party-line and partisan, a mere formality. Not a single House Republican voted with Democrats to affirm the impeachment. Not Representative Mark Amodei of Nevada, who had briefly backed the inquiry in the early going. Or Representative Will Hurd of Texas, the ex-CIA officer who earlier this month called Trump’s demand that Ukraine investigate former Vice President Joe Biden “terrible.” Or even Representative Francis Rooney of Florida, who had voiced his openness to impeachment and then promptly announced his retirement from Congress.

It’s too late after the secret kangaroo court is over with selective leaks for the last month.

So this is how the impeachment of President Donald Trump is going to go.

Or not go. At the end of the day you aren't going to move any Republicans. Except maybe Mitt Romney if he wants to commit political suicide. So impeachment is a dead letter.

So, is this a formal floor vote to start an impeachment or, is this some flim flam brought by left wing feather merchants to try and make legitimate the existing kangaroo fraud?

The writing is on the wall. The House voted to call their sham an impeachment. They authorized releasing what they want, but still no way for opposition to ask questions.

Romney is in the Senate. This article is only talking about the House.

Everyone who voted for a Democrat Representative is to blame.

Yes I know. They aren’t going to move any Republicans in either chamber except perhaps for Romney. Maybe Susan Collins if she is thinking about retirement.

I disagree. I think the author's point is valid.

Through the public vote it is clear that this sham impeachment is purely partisan -- which neither Trump nor any Republican in the House could do by themselves without control of the House. This sends a strong message to Republican senators (which the author notes) as well as an unambiguous message to McConnell that if impeachment is ultimately referred for trial it must be struck dead at the door of the Senate as the sham it is.

If 1 R had voted for it, the media would be filled with stories!

2Dems voted against it, and no one says a word (except parenthetically).

It’s flim flam. They voted to develop a process, not to start proceedings, and in the meantime, the Dems can keep their secrecy and prevent GOPers from asking questions.

This is not what GOP reps were asking for, but just another Schiff-Pelosi tricky maneuver. They’re like eels - just when you think you’ve got a grip on them, they twist and scoot their slimy way out to attack again.

Outside of their hard-core crazies, that’d would blissfully be the bleeding-heart, soccer moms all across the fruited plain.

I see them leaking key “favorable” info as they see fit, then NOT voting for impeachment (which would jeopardize too many house seats in Rep. districts). Then they will present their biased “findings” to the public and leave it up to the next election. Thus, they never provide the president with a hearing to call whiteness or counter their charges.

What a mess they are making of this!!

I disagree. It shows what the left is thinking about how well they did or didn't do. Right now, the Atlantic being a reliably far left rag, it shows the left did badly with this resolution because it failed to peel off any Republicans.
