Democrats see impeachment proceedings taking longer than some initially expected

(CNN) — House Democrats are facing a time crunch to quickly wrap up their investigation into allegations President Donald Trump abused his office in pushing Ukraine to probe his political rivals, prompting growing expectations that votes on impeaching Trump could slip closer to the end of the year.

Some Democrats had hoped that a narrow probe -- focused on whether Trump put on ice efforts to bolster relations with Ukraine and provide US military aid to the country until it carried through with a political favor -- could conclude swiftly, with a potential vote to impeach Trump by Thanksgiving.

But that has proven to be more complicated than it initially seemed, according to multiple Democratic lawmakers and sources. The reason: Each witness has so far provided more leads for investigators to chase down, including new names to potentially interview or seek documents from. Plus, Democrats have had to reschedule several witnesses, including some this week in part because of memorial services for the late Rep. Elijah Cummings, and others because they needed more time to retain lawyers.

I predict the Dems will make impeachment take until November 3rd. 2020.

I’m pretty sure there are a bunch of “moderate” Democrats in the House and Senate that would like to see this drag on for a while...before it quietly dies.

Nothing would pack up this whole impeachment circus faster than a clear indictment of John Brenner (or Obama?) for conspiring to use the intelligence agencies of this country to defeat the candidate of the opposition party in violation of their First Amendment rights.

It’s not about ‘real’ impeachment. It’s about hounding Trump from office. And a cautionary tale for anyone else who either supports Trump, or seeks to pick up his mantle. It has as much to do with a democratic republic as did the Salem witch trials. And more sinister...

I predict it will go until Jan 20, 2025, unless they get blown OUT of majority in Congress.

I would guess there are about 25 to 30 Democrats in purple districts and it wouldn’t do them any favors to vote to impeach President Trump.

Meme of the day appears to be "hurry up" - CNN and NBC both have come out with imploring editorials. The issue isn't that the "witnesses" (if there even are any real ones) have given "investigators" leads, it's that there isn't any evidence. If there were it would have been leaked by now.

The fact is that a secret hearing in a secret location with secret witnesses using secret identities in secret testimony who may not be cross-examined and whose testimony will be heavily edited before even Congress sees it might be regarded by a skeptical public as a teensy bit less than transparent. So no grand spectacle for the media, who really need one in order to sell this thing. They still have a little time to come up with something but that something might need to be an exit strategy.

For whatever reasons, that clear as a bell Come To Jesus moment never seems to come when it’s the republicans on offense. The Dems do not hesitate to figuratively drop the blade on a declared ‘enemy’.
I do not know what’s tying William Barr’s hands.

I was reading a transcript from Rush Limbaugh last week that noted that an impeachment trial would result in the Democrats losing their hammerlock on dictating The Narrative--because the Republicans could/ would start calling witnesses.

I would expand on that-- a genuine formal impeachment inquiry in the House of Representatives could have the same effect. The Democrats can't let that happen.

CNN is full of crap.

If, and this is a big "If," the Horowitz Report and Durham investigations result in actual indictments, all bets are off.

I think it’s taking longer b/c witnesses don’t have any information that would lead to anything. From what I have read and seen in hearings, witnesses are telling these commies to FO.

The exit strategy is easy—stall through the Holiday season of 2019.

Holidays in January include MLK day—maybe another ancient Democrat House member (or an unnamed Supreme Court member) croaks and the funeral arrangements cause further delay.

At that point we have the Iowa caucus on February 3 and the New Hampshire primary on February 11. Front-runner Elizabeth Warren magnanimously suggests that Congress should let the voters decide the issue.

Congress is off the hook!

House Democrats are facing a time crunch...

But no "time crunch" for important things.
