Brexit will happen on Oct. 31 despite PM’s unsigned delay request, UK says

LONDON – The British government insisted on Sunday the country will leave the European Union on Oct. 31 despite a letter that Prime Minister Boris Johnson was forced by parliament to send to the bloc requesting a Brexit delay.

The Brexit maelstrom has spun wildly in the past week between the possibility of an orderly exit on Oct. 31 with a deal that Johnson struck on Thursday and a delay after he was forced to ask for an extension late on Saturday.

Johnson’s defeat in the British parliament over the sequencing of the ratification of his deal exposed the prime minister to a law passed by those opposed to a no deal departure, demanding he request a delay until Jan. 31.

Just a humble guess, but I think the last card remaining...that might be dealt...Parliament might try to pass something requiring the general public to vote on the deal, in order for it to be accepted. In this case, you’d need at least six weeks to get the measure in some form, and have a national vote on this. Macron and Merkel might agree to a 90-day extension, to allow that vote to occur.

I don’t think it would matter too much....probably over 70-percent of the country would vote the deal down, and then you’d have absolutely nothing left on the ‘plate’.

The problem with that is that it could be framed as “this deal or cancel Brexit”

the UK needs to leave

On the theatrical side, I think more than two-thirds of the country now just wants the madness to end and some path to the future to occur. This ‘Payton Place’ soap opera theme in Parliament, with people watching the debate for hours and hours...is now a problem.

The only way for this “madness” to end is to implement brexit. Most leavers would choose mo deal over no Brexit. We aren’t going to slip away quietly if the establishment cooks up a plan that keeps us in the EU, whereas a significant proportion of remainers accept that remain lost and therefore doesn’t have any moral standing.

It sure seems that way - that everyone just wants it to end now.

The problem is that even if there is a no-deal, even if there is a deal, that’s not the end.

If a no-deal then there will be misgivings, and future negotiations.

If there is a deal, there will be future trade negotiations.

This isn’t going to end.

How are any Britons on either side of the question ever going to trust their government again?

The only way for this “madness” to end is to implement brexit —> it won’t end this “madness” it’ll end one phase of the madness.

You say “most leavers would choose no deal over no Brexit.”

But that’s only if

1. the alternative is no Brexit
2. and that’s not all

No-deal does not command a majority of the electorate in any way.

If the UK opts for cancelling Brexit, you will have riots on the street.
If the UK opts for no-deal Brexit, you will have riots on the street.
If the UK opts for the Boris deal, you will have unrest.

There is no win and there will be no end to the “madness”

A no-deal Brexit is, I believe the only way forward as it would show that pain undiluted and there would be no one else for the UK to blame besides the UK itself

I don’t think they are.

Boris is a clown, Corbyn is another clown. Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right!

I'm willing to bet just about everything I own that Brexit *won't* happen. There are too many powerful people in Berlin,Brussels,London,Dublin and elsewhere that are working to derail it completely.

Absolutely untrue! There will be dissatisfaction. There will be grumbling. But no "riots". Leftists riot, conservatives grumble and write letters to The Telegraph.

Just look at recent events in the US.Were there any riots after Obama was elected? No. Were there riots after ObamaCare was passed? No. Were there riots after Trump was elected? Yup! Are there *still* riots...after almost 3 years? Yup!

That could be true. But apart from major US corporations that employs many people in Europe (Ford, for example) it's hard to see any Americans being taken seriously when lobbying against Brexit.

I think Brexit has a lot to do with Spygate.

Seditious Americans are up to their armpits in both.

Perhaps you’re right, but I think in both cases people will be upset - very, very upset.

I do think that the losing side or sides will riot.

This entire farce has gone too long and played so heavily on emotions

Deep state tactics. Keep holding votes until you win, then declare the matter settled for all time.

Keep counting votes until you are ahead, then declare the counting over.

It internationalists are going to do everything they can to stop Brexit. They don’t care who among the proles gets hurt.

Parliament could only ask for a delay. Unless it wants to scupper Brexit by demanding Johnson request an Art. 49 revocation, the UK will still leave in the next ten days.

That’s what the Remoaners really want but they don’t have the votes for it. If they did, there would be no Brexit. All the rest is Kabuki theater.

So you support Boris deal? Which is essentially the may deal with the backstop limited to northern Ireland.
