Romney slams ceasefire deal, calls Trump's Syria move 'a bloodstain' in US history
The Hill ^ | 10/17/19 03:41 PM EDT | BY JORDAIN CARNEY

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) ripped the administration over the recently announced cease-fire in Syria, calling President Trump's decision to withdraw troops "a bloodstain in the annals of American history."

"The announcement today is being portrayed as a victory. It is far from a victory. Serious questions remain about how the decision was reached precipitously to withdraw from Syria and why that decision was reached," Romney said.

Romney's Senate floor speech came after Vice President Pence announced a five-day cease-fire.

Under the agreement Pence said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan agreed to halt Turkey’s offensive in Syria for 120 hours in order to allow Kurdish YPG forces to evacuate. The agreement will also maintain a “permanent cease-fire” once the evacuation is complete.

Romney added the administration needs to explain what the U.S. role will be moving forward. And the cease-fire, he argued, does not change that the United States "abandoned" the Kurds.

"Adding insult to dishonor, the administration speaks cavalierly, even flippantly, even as our ally has suffered death and casualty," Romney said. "We once abandoned a red line. Now we abandon an ally."

More of my opinion of the “big picture” FWIW:
China wants stability in the region for 2 good reasons:
A rail route through Turkey to Europe for their goods, and a route to the Med for their goods.

Let China pay for that, not us.

I’ll second the hell out of that. Romney needs to come out of the closet and show his supergay Democrat commie bastard side once and for all. I really hate that guy. He’s a self-serving piece of s***.

That’s a nicest f****** thing I can say about him.

Everyone saying, Oh the Kurds, the poor Kurds. You need to realize who you’re aligning yourself with and maybe realize that they know more than you do AND that any news you’ve watched for the past several years has possibly been BS.

98% of Kurds are either muslim or communist. That just means Obama armed and trained communists and that’s who you’ve been duped into rooting for because cute female Kurd soldiers are damn sure not muslim girls.

[Lot more anti-Turk forces here, though.
Though Assad wants the Kurds cleared for refugees in mostly the same places Turkey does.]

Putin is taking flak for the minimal casualties Russia has incurred in Ukraine. He’s not about to take on the Turks. Given that Russia can’t use its nukes against the Turks, any conflict with large-scale Russian involvement would be an extended war of attrition involving thousands of Russian dead. The Russians aren’t gonna fight the Turks - they’re probably on about the same level, equipment- and proficiency-wise. Maybe if there was any prospect of Syria becoming a de jure Russian oblast. Whereas Turkish gains will probably become de jure Turkish territory in time, the way Turkey grabbed Hatay.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatay_State#Background

From an American interest perspective, the issue isn’t so much letting the Syrian Kurds be overrun as a chance at establishing a friendly Middle Eastern state with a path to the sea out of Syrian Kurdistan. One thing’s for sure - this historic opportunity is now purely in the rear view mirror.

Yes, once Trump decided to go after the ATM that is the Ukraine, the GOP has obviously decided he has to go.

Diggers need to dig into Mittwitt’s financial involvement. Tagg’s investment group, Solamere Capital, is a good start.

Xi Jinping is an intra-party political schemer, not an economic thinker. Ocean freight is cheaper than its rail counterpart by an order of magnitude. Belt and Road is a stupid white elephant from which China will not see the return of principal, let alone any profits. The journalists getting bent out of shape don’t understand basic finance. Mao’s big idea was the Great Leap Forward. Xi’s is Belt and Road.

Romney knows he’s going to need huge levels of MSM running interference for him when his son’s involvement in Ukraine comes around for investigation. So he’s trying to make a few deposits in his account while he still has some little shred of credibility.

Syria is now a Russian/China /Iran oblast.
They owe too much to be independent.

Like I said above, this is all to China’s benefit- not ours. The best we can aim for is a neutral Turkey instead of one fully allied with the east.
We won’t gain from A Med-reaching Rojava without outrageous, full-war, costs.
Saw a quote from a International affairs analyst thet Kurdistan could be ‘another Israel’... but at what cost?

Let China pay. They’ll get the benefit!

Ocean freight is cheaper, but tankers don’t carry refrigerators.
And rail is faster.

I know. If Romney tripped, hit his head and went into a coma, I’d have to fight the urge to celebrate, deplorable as the impulse might be.
