Ghost Forests Are Visceral Examples of the Advance of Climate Change

As Matt Kirwan walks through Maryland’s Blackwater National Refuge, his rubber boots begin to squish. With each step the land beneath him turns from dry ground to increasingly soggy mud. The trees around him go from tall and full of leaves or needles to short, bare and pale white.

Partway out, ankle deep in water, Kirwan stops. “At this point we’ve transitioned from being in the forest, to actually being in a full-fledged marsh,” explains the Virginia Institute of Marine Science ecologist. “This ground is now too salty and too wet to support living trees.”

Kirwan is standing in the midst of what is known as a “ghost forest.” These swaths of dead, white, trees are created when salty water moves into forested areas, first slowing, and eventually halting, the growth of new trees. That means that when old trees die, there aren’t replacements.

The first descriptions of ghost forests date back to about 1910. The phenomenon can now be seen all along the Atlantic seaboard of North America, from Louisiana up to southern Canada.

Hmmm. 1910 they say? Gee, that seems a little early or it happened REALLY fast. Then there's the Atlantic seaboard from Louisiana to southern CanaDUH. I wasn't aware that Louisiana had been expanded. And the authors name? Tik Root? Like "take root"? Anyway, Tik, get back to us on the following:

1. Define the “correct” temperature range for the planet.

2. Define the “correct” humidity range for the planet.

3. Define the “correct” mean sea level for the planet.

4. Define the “correct” amount of precipitation for the planet.

5. Define the “correct” makeup of the atmosphere.

6. Define the “correct” amount of sea ice at the N/S poles.

7. Define/explain past glaciation and subsequent warming without any input from humans.

The high tide line by me hasn’t changed in at least 40 years. Till recently I spend a lot of time on my various boats. Just sold the last one.

We’re doomed! You mean climate change was happening in 1910 and no one noticed?

Its a global emergency! Man the boats and don the vests. The end of the world is at hand.

I just love being taught pseudo science by a mere journalist.

Always remember why these losers are journalists.

Climate change cult is trying to stampede people into supporting their apocalyptic view man is wrecking the natural balance of nature.

There is .zero proof for anthropogenic global warming. Its just a figment of some people’s imaginations.

And the Democrat media is the worst offender.

It all makes sense to me.. The biggest proponents of global climate doom by beach front property because the know there is only 11+ years left before we all die. Why shouldn’t they enjoy life with the little time they have left?

Meanwhile, North Carolina forests are more extensive than 50 years ago.

Ditto Alabama and Georgia

Maryland doesn’t matter

Bodies of water shift all the time. The petrified forest in Arizona is an example of a really old “ghost forest.” One can see them in Yellowstone, too, wherever underground springs have changed course. Which happens fairly frequently.

Not just their imagination, it’s their religion.
They worship at the altar of climate change and catastrophe.

Because all the marshes that ever existed have been the same as they were 4 billion years ago when the earth was created, right? And only now, after 4 billion years, after the Cretaceous mass extinction 65 million years ago, which wiped out the dinosaurs; only now we can alter the earth’s climate with CO2. A gas composing .04% of the earth’s atmosphere.

I live out in the country surrounded by beautiful forests here in New England.

They look great, especially with the fall colors.

I _do_ believe my lying eyes!

There have been “ghost forests” since there have been sinkholes, bogs and river floodplains. Where do they think large stands of petrified wood come from? Like the ancient petrified forest off of the Gulf Coast?
