Giovanni Verrazano, the first European to explore much of the East coast of the present-day US (the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in New York harbor is named for him) was killed and eaten by cannibals after he made the mistake of going ashore on one of the Caribbean islands. His brother watched in horror from the ship.

Christopher Columbus wasn’t perfect (he enslaved hundreds of natives of Hispaniola and took them to Spain—Queen Isabella freed them but many of them had already died), but he was more humane than most of the explorers of that era. He was a remarkable person—more deserving of having the New World named for him than a pickle dealer from Seville.

Even by the dismal standards of the 1400s the brutal Carribe cannibals and the Aztec practice of human sacrifice by the thousands pales in comparison to the 2000 practice of human abortion by the millions.
